Post subject:  727 Behind a slant? is it possible

hey,

i have a 81 slant six with the 904 tranny, i am guessing the tranny burnt up. i have an old dodge van with a 318 and a 727 tranny. what i want to do is bolt the 727 behind the slant 6. the reason is i already have the two and it would be a cheap fix to get me back on the road. i am guessing i would have to make a drive shaft work. What I am hopeing for is someone that would know if the 727 would bolt to the slant six. thanx everyone for their time!

Not in your case. There is a truck 727 for the slant but its different from the V8 version. You would probally loose a bunch of power also the 727 wieghs a whole lot more.

There is an adaptor to put a v8 auto behind a slant, one just went on ebay for about $150.

Fix the 904.
If there aren't any worn or broken hard parts, a 904 can be rebuilt for less than the cost to shorten your driveshaft if you installed a 727. A 904 trans rebuild kit with seals clutches and bands run around $85, last driveshaft I had shortened and balanced was $105.

Post subject:  Well, yes and no,

Hello,

Cecil and Frank are correct in my opinion...BUT!

I have done this sequence of tranny swaps into my d100: stock 3 speed out, A833OD in, A833OD out, 727 in.

First, I was able to get a 727 made with the slant six bell, avoiding any adapter cost. The slant six 727's are around, but not as common as the V8 bell, for sure.

Second, I don't know if the slant six 727 I used is car or truck, but it is now in a truck and yep, it sure weighs more than a 904. I had a 904 all ready to go in when I came across the 727 so mistakenly or not, I went for the 727 on the belief it was perhaps tougher in a truck vehicle weight application.

Third, and surprising to me, the EXACT same driveshaft I had run in the A833OD applicaton fit the 727 perfectly. No cutting or adding length. If the 904 is the same length as the 727 you may find you can use your existing driveshaft.

Last, I have one of Andy F's tranny adapters for the 518 and it is twice as much as the aforementioned one on ebay. However, one does get what one pays for, and I would caution you that I have had one of the ebay types....and found it junk compared to Andy's. Junk I could fix, but compared to bolt on, naaaah.
