SL6 racer concept (cheating?)

Post subject:  SL6 racer concept (cheating?)
I've always been fond of non practical MG's and Triumphs. I love the styling of the little roadster. I saw website where a crazy guy put a chevy 327 in a Spitfire another guy had an Olds 215 transplanted. I'm thinking get the reliability of the slant six in a cool british sports car. What do you suppose would be involved in doing something like this. I thinkt the slant is practically the perfect size. Although I'm sure i'd be in over my head doing suspension and frame modifications. But imagine pushing so many horsepower in such a light car. Hehehe and imagine the dual exhaust sound coming from such a little mobile.

I share your appreciation of British Sports cars, but a /6 isn't the best engine choice. First the length will be a problem in most engine bays. Then the weight will really mess up the handling. even with the right springs, the weight will all be in the front. The Buick V6 is a common choice for this, and they makes kits for a few cars (Triumph TR 7, search "John's Cars"). It is short, relatively light and reliable.

I really would like to see a hi-po slant under
the hood of say an XJ-6 Jag...
I already know they have kits to put the Chevy 350 in there and it's cheaper, but it would be...
"sleeker"...

Hey and I could wear an english hat and talk with a South Wales Detroit accent... :)

Thats a damn good idea. My uncle has a Jaguar X-J6 in his garage, he couldn't get it running. What kind of modifications do you think I would have to do for it to work. There looks to be plenty of room in the engine compartment. If I could keep the suspension, I'd be in for a smooth ride.

The 350 kit is a cheap and easy motor mount and crossmember mod, by all understanding from my uncle it's a pull the motor install the kit and drop the 350/THM350 into place.
For say a slant with a 904, you'll have to put the motor/tranny into place and see where all the bolts fit up, and sketch out some adapters to fabricate and install (maybe weld...).
make sure you do your motor items outside the bay, as no has any idea if you might be able to reach even the sparkplugs...
Also a pep up will be in order since a Jag is like 3800-4000 lbs due to "luxury" items and padding... "I say say old chap..more power *rrrrrr*"

My older brother is into MGs and AH Sprites, he has a few "rollers" sitting around so I took some measurments, I would fit but you would have to remove most of the passenger side "footwell" and convert it into engine bay. Looked to me that you could get some decent engine set-back.

Suspension and rear axle would need up-grading, basically a "ground-up", one-off, special car project. (read: ton's of time) You would end-up with a super light car and a great power to weiight ratio, I was thinking a "tweeked" 170 with a 5 speed would be the ticket. (or many tickets, depending on how you drive)

Well I was not thinking straight when I posted...The Jag would be fun idea but there is too much smog to worry about here in CA. I can't stand slants with smog gear scattered about. Although its really not that much clutter. Still not fun to deal with. What about putting a Mazda Rotary Turbo in an A body...I know jap parts in a muscle car...but rotary has the character of a Slant...Tough motors, zippy.

I've worked on my buddy's RX-7 simple easy to tune up, zippy, but light cars too (the early 80's models only weigh like 2100 lbs).
It's neat they come with a 4-barrel Throttle body/carb too...

Might make a cool experimant in say a 61 Lancer.

Not to mention that rotaries sound really cool! (Especially with open exhaust!)

You Probably won't want to put in a slant in an MGb. It is just to long. I already thought about it. I satrted last year on an mgb w/ a 302. Had it almost ready but had it was traded out of hte toy box for our 79 Custom 100 with /6.
