has anyone made a custom intake? i see those carb/FI intakes being made in AU. my thought is if the airflow is restricted on the intake by making a 90 degree turn then down. why someone hasnt made one for FI slants. i have a thought in my head i would have to draw. i really dont know about intake-Manifolds. what i see in my head is take the SS6 carb intake. put the runners in a square patter just going straight for the TB to be hooked up. not sure if that makes sense at all, if not a drawing will prolly help. |

Well, someone did take a weber carb setup and put motorcycle TBI on it. I would think this would be way to much fuel, even it was only 3 not 6. I don't think the 90deg turn is that big a deal for fuel injection espectially if it was direct port. Sheet metal would be relatively easy with a log design. I will have to build one for my next setup that is multiport and has a side throttle body like the newer v8's coming in behind the radiator. |

i have been thinking about building an intake for myself for when i switch to MegaSquirt. i know i will be using a single throttle body, but i am not sure on how i want the manifold to be. i want it to be somewhat of a torque manifold, but still not hurt higher rpm. is that possible? i am considering two different designs. the first would have straight runners 8-10" long going to a plenum with the TB coming out in the middle of the plenum facing the driver side of the car. the second would have the runners make a u-turn and put the plenum over the valve cover with the TB facing the passenger side of the car. this would be a two-piece design to allow access to the injectors. the flange would be in the middle of the u-bend and i would seal it with silicone. obviously the first would be easier to build, and probably the one i will build. but i still wonder if the second would be worth the effort. thoughts? zedpapa |

A purpose built EFI intake for a slant would likely be rather expensive - I'd started a thread on the possibility before, but nothing ever came of it. I've seen some of the Supra EFI manifolds selling for around $900 or more - a new EFI casting for a slant could well have a similar price tag. I've thought about building a BMW-esque sheet metal intake, possibly even using an actual BMW plenum. |

I'm trying to get into casting aluminum pieces with the foundry we got. I'm cutting some Hyperpak manifolds out of styrofoam to get a investment casting piece, but would like to make a couple unique manifold as well. What kind did you guys have in mind just out of curiosity? I was going to build a log one for my next turbo engine that was multiport and used a corvette side TB. Any other kinds that would make a "good" efi mainfold? |

i was going to build the manifold out of tubing and sheet metal. the bmw manifold won't work because the runner ports are wide and short and the new ones are plastic. the older ones are aluminum but have a plenum that is about 6" square. the cost could be kept down if you stick with tubing and sheet metal. the "log" could be larger diameter tubing. zedpapa |

we want multi port injection revs... hehehe. you could even almost drill the stock one barrel manifold at 90* on the end of the runners(by head) and maybe thread some kinda angled bung that could house a small injector. then u just need to rig up a fuel rail/regulator that would bolt to the manifold keepin the injectors in place. but everything works in your head |

If you do a google search there are articles out there with illustrations about how to build an EFI manifold from tube stock that don;t look any harder than building a header. I would not put the manifold over the valve cover. That would limit access to it for valve adjustment, which I like to do with the engine running. Sam |

good point about the valve adjustment, Sam. i forgot about that. my point was that i wanted to get some length in the runners without stretching the manifold into the left fender. i know the runners on the hyperpak were 17-18 inches, but this gave a narrow power band higher in the rpms. it also presented clearance issues with other componets. what length should i shoot for? zedpapa |

I have a mid-'80s BMW 528i aluminum plenum that looks kind of like a log with a throttle body on one side and six ports on the other. I was planning to build some curved runners that would loop things over so it goes above the cylinder head with the TB pointing over the valve cover. The other possibility I was considering was one more like this Supra manifold. It would probably need a different throttle body location though. |

I'm no expert on this, but Matt's link looks good to me. Go look under the hood of newer inline cars for ideas. I don;t know if the extra length helps with MPI. Go on line and google search this idea. I found several that looked interesting. Sorry, I don;t remember where. Just go look around. I am sure you will find some interesting ideas. Sam |

The Supra intake was basically the same thing that I was thinking about. Mine, won't be as abstract looking, it will be more primitive shapes and symetrical. All in all looks like the would rouse up some interest if I were to cast a few here and there. |

I wouldn't put the manifold itself over the valve cover, but the charge pipe would cross over it. Good point on the valve adjustment issue. |

does anybody make a flange for the intake? or will i need to make my own? i am still liking the idea of looping the manifold to get some length into it. i was planning on using a gm TPI throttle body but i recently acquired a LS throttle body. it will work but i am concerned about height. other than that i think this plan should work. zedpapa |

!PERSONAL OPINION! The TPI project that Chevy put forward has only given the people I know who own one problems. Just throwing that out there. If you want to do a MPI by the way I found they make bored out throttle bodies for the Jeep fairly cheap and a good cfm flow. I will probably use the LS or LT series TB next time though. |
