Slant Six Forum :: low gears for the 7.25??

At this time, the lowest gear for a 7 1/4 is the 4.10 (as far as I know). At one time the old Mopar Direct Connection program had 4.56, 4.88 and 5.13 gear sets. These are extreamly hard to find. In my opioion, not worth the time and trouble. Go for a different rear that has more performance parts available.

PS: I have a complete 3.91 SG 7 1/4 rear in my Valiant, a 5.13 SG under the bench, and a new 4.56 ring and pinion and used sure grip on the shelf.
Sorry none are for sale at this time.

To be wanting that low of a gear, sounds like you're gonna be beating on that poor 7-1/4 which is a fairly weak setup without all that gear; IF you can find a sure grip (hard to do for a 7-1/4) I might chance it; If not I would look for a stronger rear end to put those gears into. The 7-1/4 is not worth putting that much $$$$ into.

My 7 1/4 just happens to be a sure grip. The sure grips are surprisingly strong and lighter than comparable rears in my opinion. I just want a lower gear to get it off the line alot quicker, 4.30 or 4.56 would work very good.

Hey I have heard of sure grips before but I was wondering how can i find out if my rear is a sure grip? its a 69 Valiant 225 3 speed auto, if that make much differance.

My bet is that if you can hook up a couple hundred horsepower with slicks and low gears you'll start breaking axles.

Another option, is the 3.91, or 4.10, with a short tire. I have run the 3.91 SG 7 1/4 with a 22 inch dia tire.

(Edit: Spelling) The easiest way is to jack the rear wheels off the ground (block the front wheels), have the trans in park, turn the one wheel, if you cannot turn it, you have a sure grip. If you can turn it and the other wheel turns the opposite direction, you have an open rear.

ok thanks, I will only be able to find out probably in the early summer because it has had the brakes redone and it is still awaiting new lines for the rear brakes because the old ones had to be cut to remove the wheel cylinder, but I am definately gonna get that cheked out to see i i have a suregrip or not
