Are the truck 904's for slants any stronger than the car units? Also how do you ID a lock-up from a non lock-up from the outside? Thanks for any info. |

I don't know for sure, but they may have more clutches (4 vs. 3 front and 3 vs. 2 rear?) and possibly 4 pinion planetaries, but that is just a guess. Most V8 904s had these, and you can swap the guts into a slant 904 case. You can tell it's a lockup trans because the inner input shaft will have a machined lip on the end about 3/8" with no splines on it to seal to the lockup drive (splines are turned down to a smooth shaft). Regular trans has splines all the way to the end. Lou |

from my reading about the difference is both are just as strong. truck 904s from my reading have a longer end sections making the driveshaft shorter vs passanger car 904s. i could be wrong as this is just from my reading over at FABO. |

I haven't seen a short 904 TS on trucks, they're the same as cars. Trucks with a 727 have a short and long TS, depends on application. The long TS is heavy duty and can be ID'd by the snap ring cover at 2:00 instead of the car's 6:00. Easiest way to ID a lock up trans is the 1/2" nub on the end of the input shaft. If it's in the car/truck, look for the activation wire going into the left side of the case. |
