i've got a 7.25 in my 66 barracuda with what i believe are 2.73 gears in it. I'd like to raise the gear ratio to a 3.55 with limited slip if it's possible to do so under $500. I've heard some talk that the ranger rears will fit under a 66 barracuda but i'm just confused how you'd hook the rear end up to the trans. Aren't the flanges going to be different?

Post subject:  Warning: work ahead

It requires some grinding of perches and welding of new spring perches. Then you'll have some driveshaft measuring/u-joint figuring to do and finally e-brake cable hook ups.

It sounds daunting; but its really not that bad. I put an explorer rear end into a 74 Dart to get rear discs. Wasn't too bad. E-brake cables even worked out...u used two passenger cables from an explorer and it hooked right up.

Sandy just did the swap you are talking about. Maybe he'll chime in.

What about a 7 1/4 to 8 3/4 swap? I heard about using an 8.8 instead, easier time for parts? i have a 69 valiant (4 dr). what about just putting in a new gearset? and is there a limited slip or locker you can get for a 7 1/4 and just FYI a friend of mine welded his read on his mid 90s tracker and it hasent broken with a TONNE of abuse he has put i through mudbogging, other than the noise the rear tires make everytime you go around a corner or turn, is this a viable option?

I did the Explorer swap.

The Ranger swap is technically easier.
