I removed the original gas tank from my 74 Dart, and bought a shiny, new tank. After installing a new float and sock, I installed it. I have been told that if I want that tank to continue to look new, I should paint it. What kind of paint should I use so it retains its new, out of the box look? |

no paint-- sand it -- or rough up the surface(scotch brite) & use a clear coat-- should last for some time, Lawrence |

I'm not an originality buff, but I replaced the old factory mat with a layer of bituthane (ice and water shield) to all four edges of the new gas tank. I'll let you know when the top rusts out. |

Thanks for the replies. One of the local guys here who restores older vehicles also suggested a clear coat. However, he did not mention roughing up the new tank. Wouldn't that negatively affect the appearance of the tank? Will the scratches be visible after application of the clear coat? How many coats of clear?Sorry for all the questions. I am not a paint guy. |

my bad-- if your tank is shiney new-- no need to scuff it up. Use a degreaser & spray away!! Lawrence |
