| Post subject: | Automatic Overdrive |
Hello everyone on this forum, this is my first time to post on this sight. I have a 75 Dart with a 225 and 904. I am in the process of cleaning it up and making some changes to make it a better drive. One thing I would like to have is an overdrive automatic transmission. Does anyone know of something out of a later car that would fit in my Dart? Any info would be appreciated. |

Warning! I've had nothing but bad luck with the new model Automatic overdrive units from Dodge. The A500 blew out in my Might Max, and we went through two tranny's in our Caravans now. So... no there has been no direct bolt-in's to my knowledge. But you can read this thread to see about an adaptor set-up. Also, the A-833od is a four speed with Overdrive that will bolt into your car, but it's a manual. All in all good luck. Wesley B. http://www.slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=21521 |

Yup...as others have alluded, there is no drop-in or near-drop-in overdrive automatic transmission to suit your car, and Chrysler's 4-speed overdrive automatics don't have the sturdy reliability of the 3-speed unit you've got now. Any kind of overdrive conversion will cost a great deal of time, money, and effort, so do the math and figure out your payback period. There are lots of other mileage-improvement steps that are easier and less costly to take... |

as noted on forabodies.com, in my search to ad a OD auto to my duster. many recommend having the A500 rebuilt/builtup to be like the A904 trans. there is no easy way like they say but imo the best would be a A904 with a GV unit. that looks like my route after some body work on the duster. |

Thanks Guys looks like I will be staying with my 904, I will put my time and money in other areas to make my Dart more driveable and maybe get better fuel mileage. I have plenty of other work to keep me going for some time. Thanks again Wes |

I went thru the same cost - performance approach with my chevelle wagon. It is "easy" to just drop a 700r4 in one of those, but even doing that right adds up. No point in doing it cheaply and destroying the trans. I ended up getting a good deal on a low gear set for a th350. I built the trans myself and it is pretty cheap to build a real strong 350. It also required no other mods since I already had a 350 in there. The low set really helps out with the 2.73s I am running, which would have been swapped for something like 3.42s with an overdrive. A low set for the 904 is easy and cheap to get since they are normal production parts. With a 2.75 first gear you can get by with lower gears in the rear. With most overdrives being in the .6 - .7 range, a .25 jump in first gear can get you about half of what you want while keeping one of the lower, most common rear end ratios. If you can live with a 3.23 on the highway, it becomes comparable to a 3.55 in first gear, and a 2.76 becomes real close to a 3.08 with the low gear set. Other than the trans, no other mods and maybe not even a rear gear change. It is not quite the same, but it should only add a couple of hundred dollars or so to a normal 904 rebuild and you get to leave the rear end and the body alone. |
