 Post subject: Electrically Dead Dart

I have done something!!!!

I was trying to get my horn to work, and should have left well enough alone. Whoever had the dart before me had installed an aftermarket horn switch under the dash, it didn't work so I worked with the wiring that was there, well I got the horn to work (only with the switch on) and so I didn't think anything else about it.

When I got home today from work I went out to take it for a drive, and there is no power, nothing no lights, no starter nothing.

The charge needle says the battery is fine, and I took the battery out of my Swinger that I drive everyday and still no power to the ignition.

Please someone give me some direction. My knowledge of the electrical system in this car is very limited and I'm not sure where to begin.

I would begin by trying to "jump" the starter or starter relay. See the two wires and posts on the starter, take any piece of metal (like a screw driver) and "bridge" the two posts. If the battery and starter are good, the engine will crank over.

If this happens, then the problem is the starter relay or power not getting to the relay. You can test the relay by jumping power to the middle "SOL" connector. (It has a small screw-down "lug".) If the engine cranks when you do this, the relay s/b OK.

If all the other accessories inside the car are "dead" then I would say it's a blown fuseable link. (It connects to the starter relay.) If everything inside the car is working then check to see if power is getting out of the ignition switch and over to the starter relay.

This sounds more complex than it is. A jump wire or a test light can lead you to the problem. Test for current or "jump around" stuff to see where the problem is.

<FONT COLOR="ff0000">If you have no lights and the battery is good, it would have to be the fusable link. It is usually a red wire on the starter relay and sometimes has a yellow tag marked "fusable link".
