| Post subject: | Swaping Dakota 5 speed? |
Ok I have kicked around the idea for sometime and did much reading through past forums. I have a 64 Valiant with a 225 7 1/4rear with 2.76 and a surgrip waiting to be installed. I have gathered the parts and will be spraying it with nitrous. The car will be driven 80% on the street and 20% at the strip. I know the 3peeds clutch will not be up for the task. So logically switching to the A904 would be my best option and maybe my cheapest route because I have the tranny and radiator already. But I really want to keep a clutch in this car. I have stumbled on some past forums talking about bolting a Dakota 5 speed to a slant. I have in my posesion the adapter plate for bolting a slant to a V8 trans. I like the idea of taking a 5 speed trans from a 3.9 V6 Dakota and bolting it the adapter, and being able to us a hydraulic clutch setup, along with the wide choices of performance clutches available. I know the floor and trans-mounts need to be modified but mechanically is there anything major I am not aware of. What are my choices of flywheels will the Dakotas flywheel bolt up? And how will the car react with a the Dakotas gear ratios? I am willing to work with tire sizing and changing rear end Gears to make things match up but not sure of what would be required. Is the AX-15 the right choice for the application? Thanks Michael |

The problem is that it's a truck transmission with truck gearing. I don't believe you'll find it satisfactory for your car. You might be able to get it pgysically fit but the ratios will be all wrong; you won't be happy with it. |

Micheal You say your going NOX. You have a SG unit. What size is the SG unit? If its a 7 1/4 unit is it clutch or cone? You may have problems with a 7 1/4 holding up. Charrlie S uses a 7 1/4 SG Clutch type I think. Might shoot him a PM. My02 Frank |

I do have a 7 1/4 SG I dont recall if its a cone or clutch I believe its from a 71 duster cant remember for sure and haven't looked at it for 2 years. I am new to this tire sizing gear ratios and how they affect one another. I have a 64 Valiant 2dr current tire size 195/70/R13, And rear gear is 2.76 how would this gear combo react? AX-15 1st=3.83 2nd=2.33 3rd=1.44 4th=1.00 5=0.79 and Reverse=4.22 The gear ratios on an A833 for a Slant Six and LA engines in 1964 thru 1965 A-body where 1st=3.09:1, 2nd=1.92:1, 3rd=1.40:1, 4th=1:1 3rd and 4th gears are pretty close in the to transmissions but its first and second that are off what could I expect the difference to be? Thank Michael |

If your going to run a 2.76 rear in a manual trans car you may actually like the AX-15's low first gear since it will pull like a 3.42 rear with an 833. What I don't think you will like is the rpm drop when you shift, you do have options though the dakota bell will let you use a variety of other transmissions including the toyota R154 which has closer gear ratios. |

As one who has a Dakota trans, I feel the ratio spread question is not an issue. My 170 loves it, and I've tried it with 2.76 and 3.55 ratios, short tires and tall. If anything, a 225 would care even less about the ratios, given the extra long arm. I think the only issue is the strength of first gear. A low ratio (high number) gear set engages fewer teeth and is therefore weaker. If you hit it hard off the line with nitrous and slicks, it may puke. I've spun mine up and popped the clutch with SG and 235/60-15 Yoko's without complaint, but I don't know how far you can push it. |
