i dont know about you guys but as soon as i was about to sell my dart it started to get angry at me i guess, i believe the carburator is starting to hate me. Basically when i start the dart, it accelerates/runs/drive/idles fine, but later on in the road, it starts to really stutter big time, sometimes to the point where i hear no firing at all, whenever i press on the pedal. during this "stuttering" phase, if i go even near 10-15 MPH the engine dies on me and i have to crank it again. Even weirder is that after a while that stuttering would stop and the engine would run/idle/accelerate fine. Can anyone please tell me what the heck the problem could be, this is pretty weird and serious as i was about to sell the car and it was declined. |

Sounds more like ignition to me. What have you got ignition wise? |

i R&R'd the ignition, new spark plugs, wires, distributor cap. I did this over a year ago atleast, so i dunno why its crapping out on me now. |

The fist thing I would do is replace the resistor on the fire wall. It delivers juice to your coil. Sometimes they go bad and sometimes the coil. |

| Post subject: | Look at it in the dark for arcing |
From experience I would suggest looking at it in the dark, particularly if you are brave enough to drive at night til the problem happens. I had the same problem years ago and had an arc to ground that happened as the wires warmed up and old grease got a tad thinned out. Replaced parts can go bad too, as in a cracked cap.... rock '64d100 |

Along those lines, moisture in the cap can cause that effect. Take it off when it's hot and turn it up side down to let it dry out. |

Do i have to say it again, i think there is not enough fuel going into the intake, if it was the ignition that was the problem it would be stuttering all the time really. It has to be the lack of gas into the intake. |

if your convienced it`s fuel then check everything from fuel pressure to fuel volume with an inline gauge, the trick is electical and fuel problems give the same symptoms, if it is coming and going as the engine heats up and cools down a faulty coil could be the source

If it were lack of gas, that is an easy check, temporarily install a clear fuel filter. The electrical problems are identical and they can haunt you..... you need to systematically trouble shoot each one. |

well the problem comes and goes repeatedly even if the engine is running at the right temperature, so im unsure as to what to say, if its the coil ill see about it |

I realize you believe the problem is fuel, and it may be. Fuel is easy to check from one end to the other and your problem reeks of electric to me as strongly as it does fuel to you...that is the fun of trouble shooting! There is a class of electrical problems called intermittent. You are reporting a classic intermittent problem, i.e. one that comes and goes. I can think of several more electrical places I would look but since fuel is so easy to eliminate I reckon it would be good to do so first. But remember, you need more than fuel and fire, you need air to run right. I can see some ways air might be restricted as your engine warms up, depending on what could move and block the airway. All the more reason not to fixate on fuel, since fuel probably moves with the air in your engine..... rock '64d100 |

CAn anyone post a pic or so of this said "coil" so that i can find it in my dart and probably fix the problem, i already rebuilt the carb and got a new fuel filter, its pumping gas and air just fine. It must be the electrical. Or if anyone has fixed this problem before? |

It's a long 8" cylinder right under the alternator with a big wire coming out of it going to the cap on your distributor. Get a Factory Service Manual. |
