When the car is in gear, clutch pedal not pushed in, is the throwout bearing still turning (in contact with clutch cover) or is it not in contact with clutch cover, if correctly adjusted?

If properly adjusted, the TO bearing should not be in contact with the clutch fingers, when not pressing on the pedal.

This relates to the "1 inch of free play" adjustment at the top of the clutch pedal travel.
If you have some free play, that usually pulls the TO bearing back enough so it does not spin when the pedal is not being pressed.

You can test this by slightly depressing the pedal through the free-play, you should be able to hear/" feel" the TO bearing as it makes contact and start spinning.

Thanks, I'll try for one inch of free play. The new bearing is deeper than the old, cheap one.
