Post subject:  Took the 1972 Valiant to the strip....

Hi,
I went to Edgewater Sports Park in Cincinnati, Ohio yesterday for some 1/4 mile fun....here are the results, the car is all stock 225/904 with 2.76 gears and weighs 2855lbs with me in it. Best run was with air filter removed, coincidence I think. I left it in Drive everytime. The track starting line was really slick (early in the season). Car dynoed at 80HP & 140FT/LBS Torque at the wheels.
Run #1: 18.619.....no MPH given :(
Run #2: 18.494.....73.29mph
Run #3: 18.514.....73.28mph
Run #4: 18.415.....73.20mph w/best 60ft time of 2.568 :D
I was very Happy because I was not expecting sub 19 second times. When I was in Highschool during the mid 1980's I had a very low mileage 1972 Duster ( first car ) with the same set up and barely managed ONE high 18 second time slip in the many many passes I made in that car and here I eclipsed it from the start with the Valiant. I think the Duster was a little heavier. Great bracket cars for sure!! Now, I'm thinking how do I run sub 18's and still appear stock?....nico

I'd start with changing your diff gears for some a bit shorter.

Cool :D You should come out to the Columbus and Pittsburgh races this year.

All of the above changes and ditch the points distributor and go EI with a better ignition curve....and ditch the stock exhaust pipe for a fatter pipe...

Thanks for all the suggestions and I'd like to come to Columbus...I assume it is during the Mopar Nats?
Mods for the next outing will be:
1. increase front tire pressure.
2. remove power steering belt
3. open Exhaust ( maybe a couple of feet from the manifold connection)
4. Little race gas and bump timing up a bit
5. entire drivetrain will have amsoil synthetic
6. remove fan blade
7. remove spare tire
I really want to see how quick I can make this slant without tearing into it. would love to see a 16 sec 1/4 mile. Let me know what you think and more ideas are welcomed. Thanks again, nico

You should try manually shifting your trans. Last year I went from a 17.11 to a 16.37 just by shifting manually. My 904 doesn't rev out very much in 1st gear by itself, so I have to tell it to rev to 5000rpm. If I leave it in D it only revs to about 3800rpm, at best.

Post subject:  2nd Track outing...update

Hi,
The '72 Valiant bravely took on the 1320 today....here are the details!

1st run: 18.929 @ 70.27 mph...with a restrictive '69 slant six air cleaner.
2nd run: 18.312 @ 72.31 mph...put stock air cleaner back on..woohoo
3rd run: 18.442 @ 72.79 mph...treed a Z06
4th run: 18.369 @ 72.34 mph... 8)

The temps were about 10 degrees warmer from the first outing in March and I had amsoil synthetic in the entire driveline today. I was shocked to find out how restrictive the cool looking '69 air cleaner was...it's definately not cool enough looking for a 1/2 second hit. The next outing I will be using an electric fan/cold air intake/pumping the front tires up/ going to try shorter diameter slicks out back/ and open exhaust. Should make for a fun time... what will this set up reveal? will Valiant GO a 17.0? stay tuned for the next episode same SLANT time same SLANT channel....... :D nico
Does anyone know the quickest time for a stock slant 6? I know this varies based on the multitude of cars this engine was used in and the variety of driveline options but curious to find out if there was a record slant 6 stock class time...thanks for any info!!

Do you mean a "factory" stock slant, or a NHRA/IHRA "legal" stock slant. In 1976, my 65 Valiant with a 170 slant "legal" stock (Z/SA), could run mid 16's. The best was a 16.17, but that was under rediculasly good conditions (about 50 degrees, and equivilant altitude of 50 feet below sea level).

Hi,
Really curious about factory stock times....and how the times varied with larger/smaller vehicles....I am planning to go racing this Friday and will have all the mods posted in my 2nd post completed and ready for testing. Your IHRA/NHRA legal slant times are impressive escpecially for a 170....how did you mod it for those times?
I added an electric fan and deleted the stock fan and have felt a noticeable gain. I even had to lower the idle speed a bit. I noticed it revs up faster and highway passing is improved. I want to see how quick it gets with basic tricks before tearing into the motor.

Post subject:  3rd Track Outing....UPDATE!!

Hi,
Once again I had an opportunity to take the Valiant to the strip for some test n tune FUN! here are the results....

First six runs were performed with open exhaust and in addition I removed the stock fan and installed an electric fan per AT's specs ( thanks ,Aggressive, for the pics and overview!!), I used a K&N stock style air filter ( you can really hear the induction system with this low restriction air filter 8) ), I had the front tires pumped up to 50 psi and I removed all items from the trunk...spare etc..I put in 3 gallons of race gas and timing was at 8 degrees BTDC, the only thing I didn't do was remove the Power Steering belt because I figured it was not going to impact the et at all, and unfortunatly the 15X22X8 slicks that my friend brought mounted on PT cruiser steel wheels that he uses on his front drive turbo dodge race cars did not fit on the Valiant but it would have been neat to see how the lowered rear axle ratio would have affected the times) I think I could have bettered my best time by 4 tenths going from consistant 2.40's 60' times to my estimated 2.2 times with the slicks...

1st run...17.831 @ 74.88 mph :D best run of the night...woohoo!
2nd run..18.001 @ 74.25 mph
3rd run...18.086 @ 74.18 mph
4th run...17.948 @ 74.49 mph
5th run...17.958 @ 74.34 mph
6th run...18.062 @ 74.22 mph
After 6th run I reconnected the exhaust preparing for street driving and the results show how uncorking it really helped.
7th run...18.217 @ 73.32 mph
8th run...18.428 @ 73.20 mph
9th run...18.309 @ 73.32 mph

This has really been a fun experience with the Valiant, I feel that I pretty much have this stock Slant running as quick as it will go. Alot of people really like seeing it at the track and yup, I hear the usual, "I had one of these ( slant 6)" .
I think the next step will be super 6 induction, Dutra duals and HEI. After charting improvements with these items I will raise compression, do some cylinder head work and porting/matching. Hopfully this info helps some new folks starting out with their Slant 6 car... :D nico

Did you just disconnect the exhaust at the manifold?

Author:  Valleyant [ Sat May 24, 2008 11:13 am ]
Post subject:  exhaust disconnect

Hi,
Negative, I had flanges welded in just below drivers seat so I could do a quick disconnect. So I had approx 3 feet of 1 3/4 " pipe after the manifold before the exhaust was dumped. As an aside I found out, at the exhaust shop, that my pipe was infact 1 3/4" and not 1 7/8" ....talk about restrictive! nico
