Post subject:  60 valiant questions

ok, so i found a 60 valiant 3spd floor shift(of course). i think its a v100 because it has the short side trim by the tail lights instead of all along the side like the 200's. however, the interior is red(seats, dash ){v100's came w/grey-black}......now the strange part, the steering wheel and gauge cluster are black..??? so, what do you guys think i found here??? it has a red exterior, and the original am radio............im diggin it !!!!

My 60 V200 is white with red interior ans has the black instrument hood and black steering wheel but I changed it to match the rest of the interior, but all of the 60's that I have seen has the black intrument hood and s wheel. My 60 also had the full length side chrome.
I also had a 61 V200 parts car that had the shorter side chrome but the instrument hood and s wheel were interior colored(the 61 was black with red gut) and appeared to be original. There were quite a few differences between my 60 and 61 under the skin. Your 60 may be a late year build or maybe the chrome was an option.
SlantSixDan could probably shed more light on this, either way it sounds like a cool car and I would like to find another 60-62 Toad to go with my 60 V200.

Is the car in question the 60 Valiant on ebay in Topeka kansas now? That car is an early build car --due to the location of alternator. The head is not even drilled for the later passenger side mounted alt.

I had a 1960 v200 & it did not have the long side trim either--- it did have the bumper guards & the fender top spears though(should have kept it)

Looks like a nice starting point. Lawrence

All 1960-model Valiants had the alternator on the manifold side of the engine. It was not moved to the distributor side of the engine until the start of the 1961 model year.

All '60 V200s (early and late) had the long side trim. But this is now 2008, which means these cars and our memories of them are the better part of half a century old. A great deal can happen in 48+ years and who knows how many owners (as far as car modifications go) and beers (as far as owners' recollections go).

Optional on V100s and V200s

the fender top spears
Early-production V200s only.

If the car we are talking about is this one, it is a V100. The "red interior" is...uh...we'll say "not original equipment". The black-and-silver door panels and the side trim give the game away...to say nothing of the VIN, which does likewise.

hyper : thnx for your input, i do think its a v200 because i can make out an emblem on the glovebox door which i think reads v200 possibly.

vdart : no, that is not the car in question(although i had been in contact w/owner from craigslist listing). the car im contemplating is red on red, no bmpr guards or fender spears. that white one in kansas is too ruff for me.

dan : yes, i quess someone may have put on v100 sd trim over the years.
i have another question for you, are carpet/door panels being repopped for the 60 valiants? seller of car stated"lower ball joints loose, and torsion bars need adjusted"....possible rust issues???.........thnx dan

I believe door panels can be had out of Australia. They are high-quality reproductions from this board's own RayMan440. See them here.

Carpet, too, should not be too tall an assignment.

Possible rust issues on a 48-year-old car, you betchya!
