Post subject:  FUN with slants!

Hey guys, here's the story:

We wanted to swap a 1970 904 onto an older slant block in my '65 Valiant so we'd have more options with floor shifters and the like, and more precise shifting than my stretched out column shifter cable (the trans itself was also not shifting in Drive). I'm not sure what year the block is from, as it's not the original engine - but we do think it's older than 1968.

On the newer 904, the torque converter nub's outer diameter (don't know what it's actually called) is about 1.75"; the inside diameter of the crank on my block is about 1.5".

What are our options to get this to work? We also have the 1970 slant engine that originally went with the 1970 904, too. This job is turning into a much larger one than expected.

Aloha,
Matt

You have 2 choices. You can either use the late trans and get a converter built with the small snout, or you can use the late motor too. If you use the late motor you will have to use the pan and pickup, motor mounts, and some other assorted small stuff off the original motor. :D

The interchangeability issue starts and ends at the crankshaft/converter junction, so other options include:

• Machining the counterbore of the '67-down crankshaft to accept the '68-up torque converter

• Swapping a '68-up crank into the earlier engine

• Replacing the torque converter and input shaft of the '68-up transmission with components from a '67-down transmission

No, that is not an option.

Yep. The snout is usually hollow and machining it will cause it to break through.

we are considering pulling and swapping the input shafts on the transmissions, so we can get the later T.C. to work. will opening the transmission cases and removing and reinstalling the input shafts require any special tools?

The later torque converter will not work with the early engine.

oops, my bad. meant to write that we want to exchange the input shafts so the early TC will work on the new trans.

can this be done?

chatted with my friend.. he thinks swapping the motor will be "easier". thanks everyone for their inputs, i sure learned a lot from just this basic exchange... :(
