I know, I know...everyone yells at me when I talk about this, but I want to change my car from the pushbutton shift to a floor shift without having to yank out the tranny and replace it. Is this possible (has anyone here done it) and how much trouble is involved (try to convince me not to do it)? |

Get a 65 factory cable floor shifter and the 65 valve body for the trans. Personally I like the floor mounted PB setup better. Thats what I have in my 65 Valiant and 66 Cuda (used a 64 pushbutton assy, 64 valve body and a 65 trans). |

I've never seen, considered of even thought about a console mounted pushbutton selector until just now, after seeing this thread. It's about the coolest thing I've thought about lately; thanks for that! |

That does sound like a cool idea, but I don't want a center console. Just a floor shifter with a ridiculously big Ed Roth-style rod. I have a beer tap that would be a perfect shift knob. |

Have you looked a Lokar's aftermarket shifters? http://www.lokar.com/ Mainly used by the street rod guys but they are finding homes for their shifters in a few muscle cars lately. |

i have heard that most aftermarket shifters won't work with a pre-linkage shifter. which is the main reason we're trying to do this trans swap (aside from the fact that the older trans needs to be rebuilt)..

lokar has a part number for a 32" automatic floor shifter for the 904. so would it work with mine or would i still have to swap out for a later year?? |

Big ol' Rat Fink style shifter. I love it...Gave me an idea for when I do my 4-spd conversion... |

Yes sir. Gotta love it. But since the front seat is so close to the dash, it needs to be the single-bend one...otherwise you won't be able to put it in park. Which is what I believe is another problem. The PB just goes into neutral and the lever activates the lockout, so how would that work, if at all, with a floor shift?
Gave me an idea for when I do my 4-spd conversion... |

It won't. As stated previously, the only options, if you use your existing transmission, is to use the 65 Valve body and the 65 cable floor shifter. You could then put a big "rat fink" handle on that.

So I'd be better off just to get a 65 tranny that's already a floor shift and swap it out. Neat. Now the question is what to do with the buttons themselves and that panel...

You have to get the blank panel from a manual trans car and remove the existing bezel and shifter. |

If you really want a floor shifter, you would, probably, be better off, getting a 66 or 67 trans (with converter), That will fit to your engine, then you can use an aftermarket floor shifter. You would have to change your driveshaft to the later style with the slip joint, and use a 1966 speedo cable. |
