| Post subject: | Dodge Dart rear end. What gears? |
Hi all, since I am a "chebby" guy, or at least was, I don't know much about chrysler rear ends. Im building up a Dart 74 street/racecar with a 8 1/4 rear axle. My question is, from what cars can I find higher gear-ratios to fit my axles? I live in Norway and it's quite expensive to ship such parts, thought maybe I can use gear-set from a dodge truck or van? Im also looking for a locker for this axle.. Any ideas? Thanks, Rob |

I'm hoping that 'higher' gear ratio means you are looking for the 'drag' gears (like 3.55-4.56), not highway gears like (2.76...) Trucks and Vans from 1963-1974 would have the drag/towing gears (but may or may not have the sure-grip/locker)... Large cars (like Imperials, New Yorkers, etc...1963-1972) would have the highway gearing... Muscle Cars (like Demons with 340, Dusters 340, Barracuda, challenger...) The plain jane/base versions would have the street gears/non lockers usually... the $$$ muscle cars would have the drag gears and sometimes the locker depending on options.... Of course over time with people swapping parts, blowing up parts, you'll have to check out the rear and make sure it's got the gears you want (you might catch some guy who wanted more pep and swapped in a 3.55 in his Newport... on the other hand, as gas prices got out of hand back when... someone may hav just swapped in some 2.76's in his Road Runner....) Good Hunting... -D.Idiot |

Trucks up to 1996 should have to correct spline and possible for sure grip, good selection of 3.23/3.55/3.91 rear gears there... -D.Idiot |
