Ive got a question pertaining to the dates on cylinder heads. As I'm told the BL heads (Non drool tube where its all filled in around pushrods) came out earliest on 75 cars or really late 74 for the 75 model. However, I have 2 examples of early 74 cars with this BL head on them. They are original, all the original gaskets were intact, and had low miles on them. So what is with this? Did Chrysler have a recall on heads in those years and just convert the engines over to the BL heads? Or is there a descrepency on the dates? Both cars were Dodge Darts built in January 1974 per the door tags. The Tin plate on the fenderwell on both cars lists the engine as factory as well. Thanks! ~The Other Rob~ |

The 1975 model year was first for the peanut-plug heads. These heads swap directly onto '74 and earlier engines, and '75+ engines swap directly in place of '74-down engines, so the cars you saw probably had replacement heads or swapped engines. |

I got to looking alot more closely at the thickness of the head gasket on the 74 car we have together, and it seems that it is alot thicker than the steel shim... normally I cant even see the steel shim gasket that they normally used... so I am thinking that the head has been replaced with a newer one. Also, there are connectors on the head that I have never seen before, and dont look like they came on a 74 vintage vehicle. I would assume therefore that the head has been swapped, but the manifolds were either not removed, or they bought a gasket directly from chrysler when it was put back together, because the weird gasket that it has on it has the pentastar. Not a regular steel shim gasket either. |
