One of those prototype diesel SL6 engines came-up for sale a few years back... the owner wanted big $$$ for it.
I wonder where it ended-up?

I read that the slant six was available at one time as a diesel? Is this so and in what was it offered? Are parts an issue? Was considering an experiment changing over to bio diesel in my '75 Swinger. |

Welcome on the board. The slant-6 was never available as a diesel engine. Chrysler Engineering experimented successfully in the late '70s and early '80s with a turbo diesel slant-6 engine, extensively reëngineered with a 7-bearing crank, reinforced block, and other major hard-part changes. However, no such engine was ever released. See this thread and this post for more information. |

Well, I guess that the straight forward swap to diesel won't be easy. I was thinking that it would be an interesting swap. I wonder what other diesel would work in a '75 Swinger? M Benz perhaps? I wonder if the 2.2 from a 1900 series would have enough umphhh to move a Dart along? |

I own a '69 300 convertible, so I am on a couple of c-body list as well. There is a guy that has one in a Newport, but what I have gathered from that site is that the Dodge motor is HEAVY and that even the c-body suspension is marginal for all that weight. That was the reason I was considering a smaller power plant like the Benz or even the Toyota. But that sounds like, well work! That is why when I found mention of a slant 6 diesel I thought it could actually work. |

Does the diesel C-body have a Cummins 6BTA? I would think a slightly hopped up 4BTA would be a better choice and would save weight. Both are heavy though. The 5 cylinder Benz diesel in turbo form is probably a fair choice. I would not do a normally aspirated diesel. |

6-cylinder Mercedes 300 turbodiesels. These are passenger car engines (weight) and easy to tune up to equal big block power numbers

The 4bt is a great motor however it would not be practical in a Swinger. The engine bay would be large enough but the height of the engine is your problem. It's just as tall as the 6bt. Unless you raise or lift the car (like a 4x4) it'll be scraping the ground. There has been swaps in Toyota Landcruisers and they had to be lifted. Also even though it's a 4 banger it's heavy and reinforcement would be necessary. One more point is an uneven weight distribution. Talk about poor handling! An NV4500 trans will work but it's also heavy and big. That being said a VW is not as good as the Mercedes but would probably be a better fit (the MB injection pumps last forever). I'm not sure which of the VW's are the choice (not much experience with them) do some research - but deffinately go with a turbo. I would love to see any of your choices in a Mopar! Dale |

Have you guys seen the top gear episodes on the new twin turbo diesel motor in their 7 series? Hopefully we'll get a couple over here in the next years so we can put one in the 49' GMC! |

There is ( or was, not sure of the current status ) a deisel option in the Jeep Liberty. I wonder if it would be a practical installation and how difficult it would be to find. I believe it is derived from the VW design. |
