I just picked up a Holley 1920 carb off a 1971 car. I want to put it on my '74 in place of the stock carb. I can see I will have to reroute the fuel line and PCV hose. Will the throttle and trans kickdown work as they are? It looks like they will line up. Also there is no vaccum for the air filter warm up valve and no vent for the charcoal canister. Can these be made to work with this carb?

A '71 carburetor will have the bowl vent and air cleaner vacuum fittings.

Throttle/kickdown and choke will hook up without mods.

Existing throttle return spring may not be strong enough ('74+ carbs have built-in throttle return spring; external return spring is also used as emergency backup)

I am working with a 61 vehicle (w) Slant and I have a couple extra carbs on the work bench with bowl vent.

If I were to later on, use one of these vented carbs where is a safe place for the vent to go?

I noted on one trial when the needle and seat are is not closing I get fuel coming out the vent tube. (Yes I have a kit on order,) LOL

Is there a safety issue regarding bowl vent? I of course do not have a return fuel line, so, is there a aftermarket cannister or? Thanks, Gee/6

Directly to...nothing! The pre-'70 (California) pre-'71 (49 state + Canada) carburetors have the bowl vented directly to ambient atmosphere. If you're running a carb with ducted bowl vent on an early application, you just leave the bowl vent nipple open and untouched.
Well, yeah, that's an abnormal situation. On an unducted-vent carb, the liquid fuel would just run up overtop of the carburetor and spill onto the manifold. Same problem, same solution.
No. But if you want to put in a charcoal can, it's not hard. All you need is the can itself, a purge valve, and some hose and "Tee" or "Wye" fittings. See this post.
