When I start up my '74 225 it sounds fine, untill I tap the gas, then the engine slows to a normal after warm up idle. When I put it in gear and try to drive it it hesatates and runs poorly. After it warms up it is fin. How do I adjust the carb so the idle speed stays up longer? untill it has warmed up. It kicks off as soon as I tap the throttle? |

MichaelS, The first thing to check is to be sure the choke opening is adjusted correctly when cold. Once that has been done and if it still kicks off too soon, unplug the wire from the choke pocket going to the timer. The timer is designed to make the choke to kick off sooner. It sounds like you live where it is very cold like me. With it unplugged it will let it take a little longer to warm up. I did this and have been very happy. It varies with the seasons just right.

The 1973 and later chokes are nonadjustable. It sounds like the bimetallic spring in your choke thermostat has lost its temper and is no longer operating with the correct tension. This happens after a few decades of thermal cycling, hot-cold-hot-cold-hot-cold. Either that, or the choke modulator is not working correctly and is sending 12v to the choke thermostat heater without regard to ambient temperature or operational time. These '73-up factory "electric assist" chokes are a pain. Not only because of the nonadjustability, but because even when they're in proper calibration...they don't work altogether too well. You will likely save yourself a fair amount of hassle and headache by installing one of the adjustable Electric choke kits. Takes about 15 minutes to install, and replaces all the potentially troublesome parts of your original choke system. You need a kit #1234. |

Sadly enough I made calls to all the big stores in town today and it looks like the 1973 Electric Assist chokes are now discontinued by Standard/etc.. and not carried by anybody... the computerized systems don't show that part for a 1973 Dart anymore... and the 'book' shows the part and number but, it's shown as discontinued when they call their suppliers...the 1974+ Holley 1945 choke is still shown, and available... but for how long will be the question, I think everyone will be investing in one of Dan's choke kits eventually, and is a good investment in the long run ...FYI, -D.Idiot |

Dan, That sounds like a good cure. I will try it. I remember helping my dad put a manual choke on my brothers Duster back in the early '80s. Not a great choice because he wasent to mechanical and would leave it on to long. Nice car though I wish he had kept it, the only person I know who blew a slant six, I guess you need to add oil once in a while. |
