Post subject:  Alternative Holley 1920?

Is there any known bolt-on alternatives to the Holley 1920 (and god forbid 1945)? Ebay seems to have turned into Old Mother Hubert's cupboard when it comes to finding 1920's even remotely rebuildable. I'm at the point where it will be time to reluctantly take an otherwise decent and dependable vehicle out of service. Thanks for any advice

Fratzog,

Why would you ever want to change it?
other than going to a 2 or 4 barrel setup for racing.
What year is yours?
If you have one from the 60's I could see moving up to a 70's version for the extra fittings, but both run well.

After several decades' service, a 1920 can seemingly just plain run out of miles and refuse to run right despite careful cleaning and rebuilding. Short of that, what is causing your carb not to be rebuildable?

I am in the middle of doing an inventory of the new carbs I have on shelf...soon as it's done it'll be time to do a big carb sale "event".

1 barrels are pretty limited, that's why I'm taking inventory and getting some rebuilt, factory new would be priority, rebuilding a known good core and being meticulous would be choice #2, and the worst choices are remanf and the 'bucket' of corroded carb cores...

The slant uses:

Carter BBS (these are really simple... much like the early BBD, but easy to clean and rebuild)
Holley 1920
Holley 1945 (if in good shape they work fine, and getting the jetting corrected helps... but a bad core can really make things worse)

there are a couple of stromberg and Bendix carbs that you may find depending on the year.

Good luck,

I'd love to see someone with a truck start goofing with say a Carter YH, or one of the other types of 1 barrel...

To answer on condition- mine (1920) was not a good candidate for rebuilding in the first place but got me through last fall and winter. It didn't help I went through hell to find a float for it but the brand new pull-off was defective. The carb was, and still is missing a accel pump spring, linkages are bent to near breakage or missing, one vane in the venturi is missing, etc. I will give it credit though, It works decently at the expense of considerable fuel mileage of course. Still, far better than the 1945 that it replaced.
Running the dizzy to full base advance was not possible since with the missing pump spring it would hesitate and torque too much when it finally decided to kick in.. I attribute breaking the bead and blowing two tires to that. Yes...Its been fun.
I thought mabye some have experimented with other makes, but when a 2barrel is feasible I can see why that would be a waste of time/gas/interest/money. I don't mind getting my hands dirty, they're just dirty enough already :D and to think I'm considering buying another slant ( 71'Plymouth Satellite)

Fratzog,

Well that explains your situation. I would pick up another core. I did find a couple of good ones off eBay recently. I would pick up another one for the parts you need. Floats can be purchased through NAPA as well as good rebuild kits. Fix it up and replace those parts. It is still the simplest carb to tune and get good mileage out there.......That is what I am using!

What year car/engine is this going on?

I cannot agree that the carb kits from NAPA are of good quality. They're usually passably decent, but that falls short of "good".

it was a while ago i cam across a 1920 on the bay, i snagged it for $55. its really clean and the person said it has a few hundred miles on the rebuild.

Here in Canada NAPA has turned up zero for alot of parts they originally claim to stock. The float was a no-go even checking with several other part sources. I was lucky at the time a NOS turned up on ebay and waiting over 3 weeks to get it.
A long time ago I had the same issue with the choke thermostat- nobody carried it although they swore they did. The rebuild kit I used was a Hygrade and appeared decent enough but the pull-off was garbage out of the box. Apparently I was lucky to even get those when I did and it has been nearly a year since. I dunno...Its getting really, really tough.

I was looking on ebay and finding some Holleys claimed to be for mid-60s Ramblers and appear by every angle to be 1920s. If this is indeed the case, I either caught 3 or 4 typos or stumbled on an alternative stash for a different make. Whats the story on these?
