Post subject:  newly rebuilt 904 woes
In park the tranny seems to pulling against the park pawl. In reverse, it does nothing. In neutral it acts like a slipping tranny, in drive it works like it should.

I adjusted the bands, checked to make sure its was selecting correctly, this has me stumped. How the heck does it try to go forward in park?


This is a 1975 904 if that matters. :roll:

sounds like u got a control issue, i would check the valve body(valves/gasket/checkballs), if fluid is bypassing to another circuit it can do all sorts of fun stuff...

that's what i was thinking, like maybe a piece of crud blocking the spool or something.

Looks like I'll need another case of ATF.

Catch the ATF in a clean container and reuse it. A garbage can lid works and is wide. careful, they can be flimsy.

Home Depot and Menards sell big black plastic pans that are used for mortar mixing. They are about 7" deep, reasonably tough, and around $5. I've got a bunch of them. :D :D :D :D :D

Tonight started off well. The tranny drain was care of Fopar. I always put the aftermarket ones in before. They don't drain all the fluid though.

This worked slick!

Ok,

So, thanks to ceej, I did all the air pressure tests, I can hear the front clutch go in and out, the rear clutch I can't hear, but I can feel it. The Servos all move and tighten the bands.

I replaced the manual shift valve in the Valve Body with a known good one, but it is doing the same exact thing. IE, clunks like it is gear for Reverse but does not turn the wheels. Shifts perfectly 1-2-3 in drive or manually. Still drives the wheels very hard in neutral.

Help, I'm ready to punt! Go get me a 3 speed manual!

Anyone have a known good valve body I can play with for one evening? It passes the air tests, but why won't it go into reverse?

I don't want to pull this tranny back out until I know 4 sure what the problem is or buy a new valve body unless its absolutely known to be the VB.

Got my new valve body. NO reverse, still. I guess MAYBE the rear clutch clearances are too tight? Would that make the car drive in neutral? I can't figure anything else? Help!

Sorry to hear the valve body didn't help, only thing left to do is pull transmission. When you take it apart look at the seal rings carefully you might have one that is broken.

Would the busted seal ring on the clutch piston make it drive in Neutral?
