Hey Doc,

I got the head gasket, so I'll start scrounging around to see what might look close...

This topic has been brought up and kicked around a few times over the years, so I asked Doug Dutra to send me a used head gasket so I could size it up against some of the European inline 6 cylinder engines.

I may find something interesting and I may not, but at least I'm doing SOMETHING Slant 6 related!

Thanks Doug!

Hey Rob,while you are scrounging around if you happen to come across some unique looking taillights please let me know. The car I am planning to build is a 27 Ford roadster. Most guys put 50 Pontiac or 39 Ford taillights on this type of car. I would like to do something a little different . Both examples above mount on a flat surface so I guess what ever I use will be mounted the same way or "frenched in." I thought I read where you occasionally go to the junk yards where you are stationed that's why I brought this up. Please do not make any special trips. Don't feel you have to do this, just a crazy idea! Thanks for listening and good luck with the cylinder head idea -ya never know!

It is good to know that the gasket got to you OK.
Shoot me a PM if you uncover any cylinder heads that have bore spacings and head bolt holes anywhere close to the SL6.

wvenable,

I'll keep my eyes open, but the only salvage yards I frequent are the ones for "G.I.'s" that are full of 80s and later BMWs, VWs, etc.. Most of these cars have wrap around type taillights. If I do find something that looks like it might work for you I'll snap a couple pictures for you.

That's the plan Doc! I'm going to try and swing by the auto craft shop this afternoon for a few minutes with gasket in hand. The "BMW Crew" has 2.0, 2.5, 2.7, 3.0, 3.2 and 3.5 blocks and heads sitting around that I can check pretty quickly... After that I'll start looking at other makes to see what there is to offer.

There are numerous cool-looking options for external-mount (flat surface) rear lamp units that don't look like the same ol' ones everyone uses. Don't know what your budget looks like, but if you want to see some options in new units, shoot me a PM.
