Need help figuring out a problem, I have a 87 Ram100 with the /6. I converted it to the super six setup(carter bbd) and HEI ignition. About 3 weeks ago I filled my tank up with gas, and got on the hiway, when I got to 70mph the engine died and then kicked back in at 60. Eventually it went away. Then I filled up again this last week and it started again, but this time it would get up to 55mph and die and then kick in at 45. Instead of going away it has gotten worse. No matter what gear I am in it will go up to a certain speed and die, and then loose 5mph and kick back in. I cannot get above 25mph. If I am at a idle the engine revs up good and strong when I gas on it. Fuel is flowing thru the filter, but I am going to replace it today anyways. I replaced the coil yesterday, but still has the same problem. Has anybody had this problem before? It was suggested to me that the screen in the tank might be the clogged, but I really don't want to drop the tank if that's not the problem. |

Sounds like you have some water in your carb. You could try some alcohol dryer in the gas tank. It will aventually go away however, you may have to look in your carb and clean it out. Which carb do you have? |

I have the Carter BBD 2bbl, which I bought from Oreilly's about 6 months ago. Will give the alcohol dryer a try. |

I had a similar thing happen when the fuel strainer sock in the tank collapsed. I was getting red plastic sock bits in the fuel filter. It got to the point where I had to stop for a few minutes before it would go again. I blew air back through the line and never had the problem again. More common than that though is a leak on the suction side of the pump allowing air to be drawn in rather than fuel. I would replace the rubber hoses between the tank and pump and carefully inspect the hard line. |

"Remanufactured" carburetors from a parts store are frequently a major cause of running/driveability problems. See this thread.

New flash! This reminds me to tell you, I picked up a holley carb few years ago from ebay (about 60) and it was good shape overall and looked like it wasn't in bad storage conditions with all what it was. Till recently couple weeks ago I popped it open for jets and OHGOSH!! white powder and all the CRAP.... SHODDY rebuild strikes again. That was from a seller who was closing down their business who got it from another source who rebuild carbies assembly style. I'm glad that I got the Holley carb from my trusty mechanic to get me by for few years till I got a low miles original weber 32/36 DFEV from PRIVATE seller who had it running well on a VW 1.7 aircooled. Shop CAUTIONSLY. I had hell of time finding a carb rebuilder that really do rebuild themselves instead of swapping me another junk. MOST especially holley 5220 and 6520 carbs, nearly nobody is willing to touch it. That is mystery to me. Cheers, Wizard PS: annoying that reply button!! I kept clicking the new topics. |
