I have a 73 Dart 2 Door. A Slant 6. I was told that this Part is Part of the Seat Belt System. If the Belts are not buckled the Car will Not Start. Which I found out that it worked. Try buckling your Belts and see what Happens. My part was SHOT so I undid it. Than my car would run. It's a Herd part to find. I found a used one from a MOPAR Parts Dealer. Ron

The seat belt/starter interlock system was not found on '73s. It was only found on '74s and possibly a few '75s.

Well, I hate to burst your Bubble. But Mine has one. The Seat Belts have wiring going to them. I also have the Machanice Manual and it shows it. I have the Bad Part # 3588587 36033-K in my hands. My car wouldn't start. I was standing outside of it. I got in and tried it. Still No start. Than put my seatbelts on. Ha, it started. Than It stopped. I traced the Noise of the Relay down. Found it behind the Glove box top part. If I wrong than so is the Mopar man that just works on them. Maybe mine is a late 73. It say a 73 might be though a pre-74 Model? I'm no expert. I'm a Fiero Guy that has changed now to MOPARS for Fun. Thanks Ron's Retired Fiero Repair.

i have a 73' dart (low cost model) and my car had the interlock system also, but it was disconnected prior to me purchacing the car. i posted this post before i knew what it was. ( i was and still am trying to fix many electrical problems ) mine is mounted near the glove box. my car was built 2 - 2 - 1973 in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. my seatbelts also have the wiring that runs to the relay part # 3588587 - 36033-k.

I can imagine your '73 (and MiDi's) having a seatbelt buzzer, but neither should've had a seatbelt/ignition interlock system. It's interesting (but of course not definitive) that the final edition of the 1973 FPC, printed December '73, contains no P/Ns or other references to the interlock system. The '74 FPC does. The amendments to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard #208 requiring seatbelt/ignition interlocks were enacted such that all 1974 model vehicles built on or after August 15, 1973 were equipped with interlocks. The subsequent amendments rescinding the interlock requirement and prohibiting NHTSA from requiring an interlock or an audible belt reminder warning lasting longer than 8 seconds took effect on October 27, 1974, which is why some early-production '75s had the system but most did not. It would be most unusual to find an American-made vehicle of the '60s or '70s carrying more or higher-grade safety equipment than was required by law on any given production date; the automakers considered themselves under siege by ever-more-costly mandatory safety and emissions regulations and were very actively fighting and bucking to have the standards cancelled or at least slowed down.

OK...you sure it's not just a buzzer/light reminder system as required by FMVSS 208 on '73 cars? Does your car have a little electric box stamped "EMERGENCY START" on the driver's side of the firewall, with a pushbutton on it?

no "EMERGENCY START" on the driver's side of the firewall but holes where somthing unkown was mounted. the only buzzer i have is when the lights are on and the car is off and it only works sometimes.

OK,
Im gonna throw a wrench in the works here, that same part is on my Daughters 72 Canadian built Valiant.I have the pt.no. sticker in front of me now,3588587 and below it 36033.
I dont what it does but when the engine is not running, ignition on,it makes a clicking sound when shifted into park.
I dont have a seatbelt buzzer(or it has been disconected) and have not experienced any starting problems but would still like to know what it is.

There was definitely no seatbelt/ignition interlock on any '72s, so the plot thickens. This is an "invisible" part number, in that it's not in the '72, '73, or '74 FPCs. That doesn't mean it's not real, just that the number stamped on this mystery device may not be the part number. It is very common for parts to have 7-digit numbers that look exactly like Chrysler part numbers, but aren't, stamped, cast, or moulded into or onto them.

Let's try and figure out what this device does. "Makes a clicking sound" suggests it's a relay. "When shifted into Park" is interesting...are we sure it's reacting to being shifted into Park, and not being shifted out of Reverse? How many terminals are on this device? How are they labelled (look closely)? What wires are attached — what colour wire goes to which terminal?

What happens if you unplug this device; does the car's operation change at all?

I bet we can figure this out...

Can't quite see how many wires are hooked to it and what colours they are. Elucidate? My guesses so far are "seatbelt reminder buzzer", "key-in-ignition/door-open buzzer" and "lights-on reminder buzzer".

Thats what my part looked like but had a sticker on it and didnt have the K suffix after the 36033 and had an official looking Pentastar on the sticker. There may be a pt.no. on the part itself,I will look tomorrow as well check the operation of the unit.It is definately making a noise so it is doing somthing.

Getting closer. What colours are the wires attached to those three terminals?
