I was going to put in my distributor today for the hei switch , but I could no get it to go down fully , I looked at the gear and acouple of the teeth are flattened out a little. I guess I will try replacing the gear. My first question is what is the best thing to use to get the pin out of the gear? Second question is how much is the rotor suppose to turn when pulling the distributor out ? Mine only moved just a little, maybe like 15 degrees. Any replies will be appreciated Dave |

You need a skinny little punch to drive that guy out (about an 1/8" size think... or in a pinch you can use a nail with the taper ground off flat... do not use a tapered punch like an awl it will ruin the roll pin after a tap or two)...Second question is how much is the rotor suppose to turn when pulling the distributor out ? Mine only moved just a little, maybe like 15 degrees. Rotor turns about 12-15 degrees, so that's normal... so when you install it you turn the rotor back a smidge then slide it in slowly... did you put a distributor 'gasket'/ 'donut' under the distributor when installing (if not that might have let the gear go a bit too far down, maybe). Sorry to hear about that, gears are about $4-5 bux depending on whether you buy a gear ot a 'set' (which comes with the gear, new pin, and a washer to take up the lash if the shaft is 'sloppy'...) Thanks for the reply DI The distributor didnt go down all of the way , Talking about the donut,gasket thing.I put the piece off of my other distributor that the hold down bracket clamps on to.if that is what you are talking about. I was thinking about swapping the gear with the other distributor , but I think it is probably best to get a new one Thanks Dave |

While in ordering a new gear, see if they have a distributor gasket, it's a 'o-ring' about 3/16" thick and fits in between the 'hold-down plate' and the block... If you do get a new gear, they are only drilled on one side, so you install the gear, take a drill bit of the appropriate size and drill through to the other side, then install the pin.. take your time, and be slow about it... For a temp fix, you can use the one off your old distributor, just be careful they get brittle and can crack, and you may need to drill it too if the hole in teh shaft is a bit off (they all are in some way)... I put in a new gear ,but now I dont think that was the problem. I think the o-ring is alittle to thick. I took the one off of my old one , and put it on the new one and it went all of the way down. I guess I will find a slightly thinner o-ring and try that. The one on the old one is almost flush with the shaft (I know flattened over time) and the one on now is stopping it from seating all of the way down. I tried to put on the hold down clamp and tighten it down ,which it seems to go all of the way down , but I removed it afterwards just to look at it and the flat piece on the distributor that the clamp catches on was not flat with the shaft , so I take it that it is not wise to try to clamp it down like that Dave |
