That skip in my 75 dart is much better with the wire so I will take the instrument panel out and see if the problem is in the amp gauge. Could the ignition switch be shorting? Thanks again.

Mike,

You should be able to reach the gauge terminals from the back without removing the cluster. I think they're 5/16"-wrench nuts. This is likely the problem - pretty common, especially if someone has monkeyed around under the dash.

Make sure to disconnect the battery first so you don't spot weld anything under the dash...
