The best way to adjust this is to do it with the trans pan off. ( now we tell you, I wish you knew this before the ATF went in!)
One thing you did not indicate is if the neutral safety switch is working.
I will outline two ways to do this adjustment, both methods will referance off the safety switch.
Method #1, Pan On:
The neutral safety switch circuit must be working, also pull-off the coil wire when using this method.
Have someone hold down the "N" button and hold the key in the start / cranking position while a second person rotates the shift cable adjuster wheel. Be sure you push the wheel up hard against the trans case as you turn it. when you hit the correct place, the starter will activate. (engine starts cranking) Note that place and keep turning untill the starter stops again, find the 1/2 way place between these two points, screw down the adjuster wheel and test.
Method #2, Pan Off:
Look for the manual lever, linkage "detent pointer arm" and adjust to line-up the tip of the arm's pointer to the tip of the safty switch. Screw it down and test to be sure it returns to this place when selecting from "1st" and "R". If ok, reinstall the pan , refill with ATF and test. (You can see everything line-up and you can get the adjustment perfect by doing it this way)
Here is a look at the lever pointer, pushbutton units have a single pointer (for "N") the console and column shift transmissions have the two pointer arms shown in the upper left insert. (one pointer for "Park" the other for "N")
