My work landed me at the old Montgomery Ward warehouse in Baltimore (now a business park) yesterday. Low and behold in the lobby was an old Wards farm tractor. It had a flat head 6 with "Chrysler" tags on the starter and generator. Must be the predecessor to the Slant 6, I guess. I could see the similarities of how the manifolds bolt to the head and the heat riser between the intake and exhaust. Pretty cool, I thought. |

That be a 230cui chrysler 6 industrial motor circa 1951. All these L-head engines shared a similar design including Ford & GM since the 20's |

My '53 Belvedere had a 217 flathead in it. Not alot of speed, but with the gearing, you could pull a house down with it! LOL |

If I go back there I'll make sure I take the camera. If your in Baltimore, after visiting the B&O railroad museum, stop by Monroe St. and (1800)Washington Blvd. Tell the guard you are going to the Maryland Department of the Environment. Check out the tractor in the lobby, then go to the cafeteria and read all about A. Montgomery Ward and his mail order company. The building was built in 1925 as Wards expanded from their Chicago location to serve their East Coast customers better. Thanks for the replies and info. |

A great engine in its time, and still not without advocates to this day: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMukzqkY0Z8 |

I have a flathead straight 8 in a 47 New Yorker. It has a 1 bbl carb and is geared severely. May take forever to get there, but she absolutely loafs when she finally makes it to 100. All of 130 horsepower out of 323.5 cubic inches |

You have to remember that those flathead 6's and 8's were designed in the early 30's, and old man Keller had absolutely no interest in performance in those days. His hot buttons were economy, comfort, and durability, and the Mopar flatheads gave that as well as anybody's. At the 1949 Auto Show, Chrysler exhibited their rather stodgy redesigned cars. While others had designed cars that were lower and longer, Chrysler's offerings were of a "box on box" design that suffered not one bit because of any nod to styling. Keller told members of the press that the the new cars featured "chair type" seating, which allowed room for a man to wear his hat while driving. Tired of answering the styling question over and over, when a woman reporter asked about such dated styling on a new car, Keller was said to have replied, "Because we build our cars to ride in, not to pi$$ over!" OK, I know I am off topic, so I shall now go and reprimand myself. |
