Post subject:  Tach/Dwell meters
I have 3 different Tach/Dwell meters. All from different manufacturers, and of varying vintages.

I tried all 3 on my car and got almost 3 different readings.

The first, which appears to be an old SEARS brand doesnt show anything at all.

The second which looks older and has selections for 6/8 cylinder and which you want to monitor Tach/Dwell, shows 45 for Dwell and when the car is idling, with the selector on Tach, 7500 RPM. :shock:

The third is a newer one (less than 1 year) is a Taiwanese unit that has worked just fine on all the other cars I have used it on shows 45 on Dwell, and 6500 RPM @ idle on the Tach selector.

Why do they show such a high RPM, when the Dwell part functions correctly? What are the chances that both RPM gauges are bad?

I have not hooked up a standard RPM gauge to it... I dont have one... but these work the same way that an RPM gauge does, so it shouldnt matter what gauge I use correct?

Black wire goes to a good ground.
Red wire goes to negative post of coil.

Doesn't work with MSD ignitions........

The Dwell part needs a good battery in the meter to work correctly. RPM usually doesn't care, but it might


I'd say you need fresh batteries in the meters........

Are you sure that they use batteries? Ive got all 3 apart infront of me and none of them have a provision for a battery of any kind.

Mine do, but the battery may be for some other functions

If you look at the scales close my guess is that will be 750 and 650 RPM. There may be two RPM selections, or it may be a double scale that reads different depending. AT the bottom of the scale it should say something like ( X 10, or X 100, or X 1000 ) .

i hope you got your tach problems werked out, best bet is always a sunpro tach with there adjustment for 4/6/8 cylinder engines and optional dimming / dash light connector. i am running mine full on. they run 34.99 @ autozone and are soild as hell. thanks again for the help BTW i owe ya few pints when ya turn 21. @ the pick a part junk yard, forpar,ceej and i where @ there is a green 74 or 75 swinger/scamp with a decent radiator and hoses. they seem to be cheap for what all of us paid today and that might fixor up yer cooling problemz.

anyways looking forward to when you come on up to portland someday!
