I just bought a 265 Hemi-6. I bought it because the rarity that it is inside the United states. I know it has nothing in common with the slant six... aside from the number of cylinders. Does anyone here have experience with them, and what does everyone think of them compared to the Slant 6. |

Great engine mate and as walpolla said check out that oz site , very tuff engine the 265 with a huge history over here, in a factory oz Charger went flat 14's back in 1971 . I have raced one ,dirt track speedway and it was a screamer , ran with a 750 holley plus big cam and belted all the V8's in my class All things equal they will eat a slant. |

How can all things be equal when you start with 40 more cubic inches? |

I've taken it apart, as the previous owner had warned me that it needed a rebuild. I found a company that sells a gasket set for it. It won't be here for a couple weeks. However the heads seem very Polysphere-esque. The combustion chamber is domed, but not all the way to the deck. It seems like a neat motor. Is it true that Chyrsler orginally designed it to replace the Slant 6? I heard that the project was stopped, and it was only revised because they needed a six that could accept a right hand steering box, and the slant of the /6 got in the way. |

Chrysler HQ (in Michigan) started work on the D-engine (=Hemi 6) in 1966 with the idea of making a truck engine. Development was stopped due to lack of marketability (the North American market wanted V8s, mostly). Chrysler Australia wanted larger Sixes, so Chrysler USA sent some engineers down to finish development of the D-engine at Chrysler Australia, who released it as a replacement for the slant-6 in locally-produced Valiants for the 1970 model year. It was sold only in the Australia and New Zealand markets; most cars built by Chrysler Australia for export (e.g. to South Africa) got the slant-6 or V8. No. The slant-6 was used in RHD vehicles from 1960 clear on up through at least the mid-1970s.

Well, they have slant six's in the right hand drive cars also. So I would guess thats not quite right, but there may have been something to it that got it all started. Anyway, the guys that build those engines get a lot of power out of them. The head really flows good and it has more main bearings than the slant does so it should be a stronger, more durable engine. I have often wandered if they would even fit in a US car. If they will then the Jeep 4.0 engine should fit and that would give the slant guys a good alternative late model engine to use besides the slant. Did you get a transmision to go with it? I do believe they have a different trans mounting pattern and you will need a trans, or bellhousing to use it. You will just have to check at the forum they give you a link to so you can find out for sure. Anyway there suppost to be great engines, plus they got the name "Hemi" attacted to them. They even made a factory six pack setup for them. Jess |

They are about 3.5" longer then a slant actually..and the Aussie cars had a longer engine bay to make room for them. They can be made to fit the earlier (slant size, and US too..) cars, but are tight and no room for a mechanical cooling fan from memory. Here is my Charger..

Oz...can you send me a link to your e-bay. I'd be interested in it as mine won't be running for some time to come. I'm in CT and would be curious to know the shipping. Please let me know, I love the odd-ball chrysler engines. I've built many polys, and these seem very interesting. |

Quote: most cars built by Chrysler Australia for export (e.g. to South Africa) got the slant-6 or V8. We stamped our metalwork mostly over here. The American Valiants Up to were 72 were a mixed batch with the Charger aka dart demon being imported ckd same goes for the Barracuda but the VIP and Regal - aka Dodge Dart being stamped over here We never had Australian 60's pre VH shells over here - and the VH only came along in end 73 Now how do I know all this? Talked to a local Chrysler development engineer. When Chrysler left RSA they buried all the remaining tooling and spares in a ditch and poured concrete over it Oh yes - we NEVER had V8 valiants over here only slants Quote: No. The slant-6 was used in RHD vehicles from 1960 clear on up through at least the mid-1970s Quote: The CL Regal SE we got over here was a slant with a 4BBl Carter AFB Production started in 78 and ran until 80 with the last cars sold in 81 |
