Both of my roof rails are cracking and rust has already gotten to one of them. I had a water leak on the drivers side, so about a year and a half ago I bought some of thise 3M seam/gutter sealer stuff that I put in. It didn't level very well and doesn't really sand smooth either. But it filled in the roof rail and I primered over it. Well now its time that I prep my car for paint and I was gonna do the other roof rail the same way. The problem is that the side I already did, is already cracking and will be leaking again here soon. The sealer is soft, like I can push it with my finger and some parts will press in. Is there a better way to seal these roof rails so I can do it once and never worry about it again?

I saw in another thread a guy talking about 3M self leveling seam sealer, but it needs an expensive gun to apply and I don't have the money or any friends that even have access to that. Has anyone done this fix yet? If so, I'd like to know the best way to go at it.

I should really try to get another gun and rent it out  .

Do you remember EXACTLY what sealer you used on the one side that is cracking?
The only thing I can posibly think could happen is that it cracked due to UV rays (assuming you have been driving or storing the car outside). Primers and even base coat has no UV protection, the clear coat or single stage paint has the ingredients to protect against sun damage.
