It always ticks me off to pop the hood and there is this grotesque alum alt.with barnacles all over it.So the question is,what do people do to protect things like the alt.,alum rads etc? Tried wd40 but that is a dust magnet and I'm leary of painting the alt.without taking it apart.Any ideas? Thanks :)

yeah. know what you mean. my 97 ram, 97 wrangler and 01 cherokee are all the same way on the alternator and intake manifolds yet the 100 A alt on my 78 Fury isn't. I think it has to do with the rougher castings on the newer vehicles; the alt on the Fury is original from 78 (I just replaced the bearings and brushes in it a month ago) and is a "smoother" casting. (or did you pull yours out of the river? ) Don't get mad---- just kidding, though I believe the road salt they use around here in the winter don't help that situation any.

Maybe try some of this:

Ran across it when I was researching aluminum wheels. Haven't tried any myself, yet, but I plan on ordering some when I get my intake.

Penetrant/oil is really not what is needed here.

Chrysler used to sell an excellent clear corrosion-preventive spray paint, but they discontinued it some years back. I've finally found what acts, applies, smells, and seems to work identically to the Chrysler stuff (it's probably the same stuff):

Nyalic. Eastwood used to sell it, but no more; they now have their own line of clear coats, which I don't aim to test. A phone call to the Nyalic people will probably turn up a way to get hold of it nowtimes.

Thanks guys, good info and food for thought.Just one of the little things that bugs me,you know? Almost like it needs to go to the ship yard for a haulout and bottom cleaning/paint  Maybe I'll just throw acouple of salmon rods in the back an hang a SeaKing off the bumper 8)
