Here's set up for the motor I'm building: 280 deg, .465 cam, big valves, 3 angle, ported, 340 springs, milled .100", double roller chain, Offenhauser 4 bbl, Edelbrock 500, Clifford shorties. Should I get electronic ignition? Is it worth the money? If so, which one is the best to get, where do I get it, and how much is it? I have all the parts and am starting assembly now. Also, with that, should I get a better coil? What about plugs and wires? Thanks in advance |

Electronic ignition is better in every way than the points-condenser system. The Mopar system's fine; the HEI upgrade is better. |

I am running the MOPAR ECU orange box with a MSD Blaster 2 Coil and the resistor that comes with it instead of the MOPAR resistor. Voltage at the coil at idle is 10 volts. Summit 8mm blue silicone wires that you custom cut, NGK GR4 plugs @ .045 and Echlin MO-3000 extended tip rotor. The MOPAR system can work well with a little help from MSD. The weakness in the Mopar system is the Chrysler-supplied ECU box (the "orange box"). Other-brand Mopar-style boxes are better. If you are running an MSD box, you are not running the Mopar system. Likewise, if you're running HEI, you're not running the Mopar system. All of the options use the Mopar electronic distributor; what differs is what you connect to the distributor and what other components are used. (The exception is the Mallory Uni-Lite system which does not have a very good reputation).

So, to cater to my stupidity, what all do I need, supposing I want to convert my '64 D100 with stock ignition to EI? What MSD box is good to get? |

Electronic-ignition distributorControl module (Mopar box, HEI module, MSD box, whichever you might decide to go with) Appropriate wiring Appropriate coil Ballast resistor if you choose to use the Mopar or MSD box, not used with HEI (Did you click and read the HEI link I provided...?) HEI = equal performance to MSD, with better reliability and less expense. |

Yep, thanks. I'm all clear now. I think I'll run the Mopar EI distributor with an Accel HEI module and an MSD Blaster 2. Thanks for the help. |

Pinkie, Look at my old threads about ignition in my '64d100 I would NOT use the Blaster 2 based on my having gotten a bad one, but I WOULD use the MSD6 and am running it now. If you use an E core Blaster coil you should be just fine unless you will be running your truck at 6500 rpm at the end of a 1/4 and if so I would modify my suggestion. I would not use an Accel module...MSD is almost universally used and has more forum advice. First though, I advise you to create a seriously good ground. I ran mine by using a battery cable with two flat ends, one to the firewall, one to a bolt from block to tranny/bellhousing. I rewired everything, eventually to include relays for high and lo beams and other components, but you gotta have a good ground for a good spark. I put in a Mopar EI dizzy I recurved, then wired in a GM HEI module setup and added fittings to the E core coil to plug it to. I run the MSD6 box to the E core for my main deal and have the HEI for backup. I also keep a spare stock dizzy with points in the cab for just in case both EI setups fail. The MSD box tucks neatly to the steel body part that the headlights mount to (beside the passenger side radiator mounting flange). i mounted the MSD to a 1/2 inch thick teflon plate cut from a cutting board, and mounded the coil to a teflon plate under which attached a piece of wood dowell that fits tightly into the stock coil holder. That lets me swap in a stock round coil if I need to. I also mounted a 1/2 inch by 12 inch by 2 inch aluminum plate as an ignition module ground plate to the inside fender above the shock mount. I run a GM 12 SI alternator low on the driver side so ran the MSD red wire under the flange in front of the radiator to hide it, over to the relays I installed on the driver side fender for the BAT out. I think I will put in my 2 cents worth. This is what I run on my race car: Slant six electronic distributer (recurved), AC/Delco 4 pin module for HEI, aftermarket GM "E" coil for a 1999 S-10 V-6. Every part is available at a local part store, inexpensively. A MSD-6 is not needed unless you are running very high compression, very high RPM (and then I think the dist would be the limit, not the HEI), or have a misfire due to other issues (fouling plugs, excessively lean, etc). PS, I did compare the MSD 6 to the HEI, at the track (same day), and noticed no difference. So why spend $175 -$200 for the MSD, when the HEI works as well in most cases, for about $50? |

I used to have Rock's same setup (MSD 6 with HEI installed under the hood for backup). The MSD failed me, I shifted the wires to the HEI in a parking lot, and I never had any good reason to repair or replace the failed MSD. |
