Post subject:  Ragtop roll bar
I'm considering getting a 4 or 8 point roll bar from Jegs or Summit for my A-body convertible. Mainly for structural support, and safety in an inverted driving situation. I was also thinking about tacking on a bracket for a shoulder belt. Has anyone welded one into a convertible or other body type?

Post subject:  It's kind of a long story
One day I found myself on Storrow Drive in Boston in my Toyota truck facing the oncoming traffic while hanging upside down from the seatbelt, moving backwards in the direction of traffic flow. I didn't plan to do it, but if I happened to be doing the same thing in the 67 convertible, it might be nice to maintain a safe distance from the road surface.
Note to overcaffeinated Yuppies: don't try to pass using the exit ramp. You might run out of ramp and need to cut back into traffic without sufficient room. :shock:

Ummm...

...how are you going to install a roll cage in a convertible, without it no longer being a convertible?

I'm not trying to be flippant, I'm just confuzzed.

I was thinking more of a just a braced roll bar, that would fit under the top. I don't plan to race, although my rebuilt slant makes it tempting to go fast.

Being a convertible would make it hella easy to put a cage in. Be advised that just because they call it a "kit", some really good welding and fab skills are still required. You also need a good set of subframe connectors to tie the car together before the cage goes in.

It would be much easier to teach yourself not to drive like an idiot. :lol: :lol:

I really think winding up upside down is so far down the list of risks you take when you get in that car that I would be very much inclined to spend the money and effort elsewhere and solve the bigger safety problems first. Better seatbelts. Better brakes. Better headlights ;-) . Remember, compared to a passenger car, your pickup truck has a high, tippy centre of gravity.

Everything but the headlights was already on the list, but even with a recent complete brake job, the 9" drums are definitely iffy. Saving up for the BBP swap.

roll cage on a convertible so if you forget to put on ur seat belt im sure ur in for alot of pain if i land upside down :shock: in my opinion its gonna look like a dune buggy or something with a big windshield ha

I was thinking of it as much for structural 'rigility' as for safety. Putting in subframe connectors helped to stiffen the frame already. This is a New England bucket, so it needs all the help it can get. For under two hundred bucks, I can play with the welder. I have a professional checking my work, so that helps.
That Toyota I rolled was jacked up with helper springs by the previous owner. Really didn't do well sideways.

It was more like when you're skiing, and suddenly you look up and see your skis and the sky moving in fast motion. Cashed in some good luck that day! The Yuppie even pulled over with insurance info.
