Hello, started to repair the manifold and of course read the tech article. I do not have access to a torch, so i am wondering, to pull the two halves apart will i need to get a torch, and is it mandatory to replace the steel gasket between the two manifolds? I would presume this has never been apart before. Its been soaking with penetrating oil for weeks Finally the exhaust bolts too are seemingly impossible to remove. Torch again, and will propane cut it ,or does it need to be oxy/ acetylene ? Thank you |

It's a good idea to change the stove box gasket and resurface the face. When my bolts broke off, (same condition as yours), I drilled them out and used stainless steel bolts washers and lock nuts. It makes it a much simpler repair. |

It is very much worth your while to get the good gaskets for the manifolds-to-head and intake-to-exhaust junctions. |

In answer to your original question, I have found that a good application of heat from a propane torch has saved me from dealing with broken studs. But sometimes broken manifold mounting studs are seemingly the price of doing business with a slant! -Mac |

Thanks for the replies, I used map gas, 12 bucks from the hardware store exhaust came off, next is to split the manifolds, later tonight when it cools down some. Drill and tap for the missing manifold studs, then will be using a napa gasket if I need to. ( the GPRS gasket still hasnt arrived, but Im hoping to see it arrive by mid week, and keep the napa as a spare) So Ill keep busy with painting and detailing, maybe luck out. |

I used the graphite gaskets from Remflex.com and GPS. I must say I prefer the Remflex. Great folks to work with which is sometimes rare these days. They are very thick and will solve allot problems with imperfect surfaces. They UPS them out pretty fast and stand behind their product! |

I would advise you to wait until that GPRS gasket comes in the mail. I tried the Napa gasket and had air leaks galore. Put the GPRS gasket on there and it sealed up just fine. |

Russ, Don't rush it at this point, especially if haven't milled the manifold mating surfaces. Don't forget to put new studs in the head with some Lock-Tite and get some new brass nuts and two new castle nuts. |
