Chrysler apparently ran off a few of these (very few, I'm to understand). None made it into commercial availability. -Mac |

Doc has one, and boy, I'd rather lean over a fender to put that one on, than a stock iron head.... -D.Idiot |

Was an experiment - and as far as I know not a performance part - the only gain you will have is with weight - but since they are not available it is a moot point |

An aluminum head would be easier to work on and repair if you screw it up, but there probably wouldn't be a whole lot of difference when done. |

Wouldn't the better distribution of heat in an aluminum head allow you to increase the compression ratio with less chance of detonation? |

Yes it would, but it takes the extra conpression just to get back to the same HP level because a iron head will really make more power if alll things are equal. But the extra commpression you would use with aluminum would give less cylinder volume so it could possibly use less fuel. A aluminum head could be modded more though, ports could be welded and moved around and made into a better shape. But to make good use of it you would need to turn more RPM. But you might just be able to get better fuel mixture and velocity with the same flow also when modding like this, depends on the head. But that could be a good thing if done right, sometimes there is more power in this type of thing than flow itself. When you get a head that can give all three ( good fuel mixture, velocity, plus flow) then your getting somewhere. WIth the ability to spray weld these days you can about do anything to a iron head that you can do to a aluminum, it just cost more, but iron heads are cheap. Jess |

You also have to have a combustion chamber shape that was conducive to helping that out... an old style open wedge with nickel sized 'bumps' in the chamber, isn't what I'd call a real help in making it more 'ping prone'... -D.Idiot |
