I got a Remflex intake/exhaust gasket and installed it when I did the head swap. I noticed on the package it said to only torque to 5ft-lbs. Not much. Is this right? Also, the fwd and aft studs that I replaced are leaking coolent (I used sealer, got me). Will this harm the gasket? I only drove the car about 6 miles from my folks house to my place. When I parked it is when I noticed it weeping from around the studs. Thanks. |

Eric, Yes, I did mine at 5lbs. You put the gasket on dry, correct? I had cleaned up the mating surfaces shiny clean before installing the gasket. What ever you do, don't retorque the nuts. That was my mistake the first time. The gasket is so thick that re-torquing the manifolds will distort them. The gasket barely compresses but will seal just fine. Isn't space shuttle technology awesome? The weeping water shouldn't hurt as long as you don't drive it too far. Steam will erode them. Pull the studs hot and clean up the holes and use loctite. I think these peanut plug heads have less material at those two locations. The water jacket area must be huge! I also had a accessory bolt hole on the top leak as well. Mine had the exactly same problem the first time I installed it. Got some pictures of the gasket installed if you need them. |

Thanks. My torque wrench only goes down to 10ft-lbs, so I had to use my "calibrated" hand. |

Eric, The castings aren't that thick at those points. At least mine wasn't If the tape doesn't do it, go for the loctite. I wouldn't want to see you driving it to Everett and back blowing steam out those holes and eroding the gasket. I wrecked "SL6 Dan's recommended GPRS Aussie graphite gasket" doing that. Just a 130 miles and the steam ate through the grahite down to the metal core. I had to JB Weld the back stud in with a heli-coil because the casting was so thin. The hole was only 3/16" deep in the back corner. I also had to do the same for the one on top of the head. I did try teflon tape and the teflon sealer in a tube. Neither would hold the radiator pressure do to lack of surface area in the hole. I did the JB Weld repair over Christmas break and they are holding fine in the 90 degree heat. |

That's what I ended up doing. They are nice to have for working on the Slant 6. |

Well, I ended up using some Permatex thread sealer...kind of a liquid teflon tape looking stuff. I drove around for about a half hour tonite, and let it idle for 15 min or so and no leaks. Yea! |

That is great! Now you can get the 1920 Holley out with idle air adjustment and try for some mileage runs. I know mine sure has turned around since I did the mod to open it up. Good power too! |

numbnuts me,called weds and ordered a gasket from them ,told them I wanted it two days so i could install this weekend,forgot about the 4th,my shop is closed mondays,so i wont get it till tues,I screwed up and wasted money,INCHE pound torque wrench waiting,mark |

I have been running my 1920 carb with the screw to adjust the idle air Ted. I still have the #58 jet in it, may try a 60 later. So far, it runs great though I havn't had it on the freeway yet with the new head. Seems all the adjustments I made with the dead cylinder work well with a healthy engine. I'll futz around with it more though, you know thats a given. |
