What are the chances that the engine would be a 198 Slant six in a 1971 Duster? The reason I ask is, the original engine (SL6) was removed to replace with a big block and is available for free. Haven't looked at the engine, just wondering if the chances are good it might be a 198.

It could happen, being a 'base' engine these usually were a 'cost' lowering option on the A-body... it doesn't hurt to look, you might get lucky...

good luck,

Hi,
If the 5th character in the VIN is "B" then it originally came with the 198cid slant six......so it would read VL29B1 and so on, next character would be assembly plant then production sequence numbers follow.
If "C" is the 5th character then it originally came with the 225cid slant six engine. Good Luck! , nico

Someone posted a link to a youtube commercial about a girl buying a 71 198 Duster. She even mentioned the engine size!

I never heard of a 198 'til I bought one!

The link was on Moparts in the general section.

If the engine is stamped "198" on the pad behind the alternator bracket, it's a 198. If it's stamped 225 or just 25 it is a 225.

The block in my car now is out of a '70 Swinger that I parted out years ago. I also had a 198 from a '74 Duster that a kid gave me when he put in a small bleck.
