Car is a 1965 Dodge Dart GT 225cid 904 trans Floor Shifter With console.

I'm sick of the twin cable transmission !!!! I refuse to pay $340.00 plus shipping. for a pair of cables! Another problem came about last week. I noted a HUGE Tranny fluid leak. The small cover at the rear Of the tranny pan, that houses one of the cables is broken at one of the bolt holes. I found out it was broken off when I took the bolt out and the corner of the cover dropped and hit me in the mouth!!!!! What I need to know is what other 904 will bolt in? I don't to change anything other than the transmission. I realize I will have To deal with a way to shift the new tranny I will either modify the factory shifter or use an aftermarket unit.

I could REALLY use some advice/help

THX

You can bolt in the '66-'67 automatic and use the later floor shifter fairly easily. The trans bolts right in, but the shifter will require a little fabrication work as the bracket is welded to the floor.

With the 66-67 trans, you will also have to change the driveshaft. 65 used the B&T front universal, where the 66 up use a "standard" slip yoke.

If you swap in a '66-'67 transmission, you'll have to rework the shifter and get a different driveshaft (slipyoke and cross and roller front U-joint rather than bolt-up ball and trunnion front U-joint), and you'll need a different speedometer cable.

If you try to swap in a '68 or later transmission, in addition to the above you'll also have to have either a custom torque converter (small nose, large spline) or you'll have to replace the '68+ input shaft and pump drive with '67-down pieces.

If using the 66-up 904, use the adapter shifter cable from Imperial Services. Allows you to use your original shifter w/o mods and the replacement transmission - minor mods to the valve body need to be done there.

Why not just use an aftermarket shifter with the later tranny?

If you were in Oregon, I'd give you a 1967 A904 for a rebuilder....

The original poster will have to decide, but me, I've never seen an aftermarket shifter that doesn't look dorky...

I am putting a t-5 in my 1965 Plymouth right now. My 904 is in good shape, and worked really well. Best of all, I was beyond careful taking it out, and followed the shop manual to the letter. I may end up kicking myself for this, but if we can figure out a cheap way to ship it to you, I am willing to part with it for a small amount. I am in southern California.

(I gotta tell you, I have really mixed emotions posting this, but I am hoping to build up good parts Karma for some future need. Call it the 'Layson' effect that I am trying to avoid.)

Why, you selling Chinese parts as NOS with the Mopar logo and afraid you might get arrested?
