Moving from San Diego back to the South Carolina mid-September. Could have it transported but couldn't bare to leave here in an uneventful empty handed plane ride out. Figured there's no set time frame, and adventure to be had doing some sight seeing and head-clearing along the way. Car's been running solid for a year now outside of some very minor, common hickups that can be worked through on the road forbid something happen. Other than stocking up on wear and tear parts, checking tires, and a tune up a couple weeks ahead of time, what are some suggestions for things I should put a closer eye to or general maintenance stuff i could have overlooked that would minimize the hassle of taking a 40 yr old car on a trip like this? |

I do drives like this every year or two as does Seymour P and others (I have 64 and 68 Darts - did VA to LA, CA and back last May). If you haven't had problems around town and you put many miles on it already, you should be fine. Watch oil level over the road. Make sure radiator/cooling is up to it with a longish cruise on the hwy? Should be fun! Lou |

Take a look at the U Joints and make sure they're ok. I had them go bad just as I got into town after a 600 mile trip once. Make sure your accelerator cable is in good shape and not frayed. Listen for any sounds, like wheel bearings etc that might be going bad. Brakes of course. I would maybe grab an extra ballast resistor just in case. Make sure things are torqued to spec. |

Just general road trip advice, have an idea of which route across you'll be taking.. are you planning on going really south (I-10, I think it is, or is it 15?) or farther north, like I-40? That will help you get an idea for what kind of terrain and weather you'll be dealing with (mountains, deserts, etc.) and you'll be able to prepare better. Atlases are your friend, Thomas Guides are awesome. Otherwise, pretty much what everyone else has mentioned. |
