Post subject:  How do you test the air cleaner temperature sensor?

So I am getting the hot and cold air induction systems on my brother 83 Dodge van back up and working again and I think the air cleaner temperature sensor isn't working. When the motor is cold, the flap on the air cleaner snorkle should open to allow the hot airfrom down by the exhaust manifold to go into the air cleaner, right? Mine doesn't open, it just stays stuck in the closed position.

How do I check if the air temp sensor is functioning? Also, does it matter what port on the sensor I plug the hoses fromt he carb and the flapper into? I don't think it should since thise should be an open/closed type switch.

And I already checked and made sure that the flapped vacuum pod is good.

When the ambient temp is low, there should be vacuum to the snorkel actuator so the damper is lifted up, so air has to be drawn in through the bottom inlet. When the engine's hot and/or ambient temp is high, there should be no vacuum to the actuator so the damper sits on the floor of the snorkel and air is drawn in through the front inlet. The temp sensor looks like a flying saucer with a small round chimney on top. The vacuum source (manifold vacuum off the carb) gets connected to the port that's under the side of the sensor without the top chimney. The other hose runs from the port under the chimney side, to the snorkel actuator. See this thread for replacement info.
