Hello, I have a 67 Valiant with a gas leak. It looks to be coming from the sending unit, where the line passes through the circular plate on the outside of the gas tank. In searching the forums, I see that this crimp can be TIG welded. I've found a local shop that can do it. A little nervous working on the gas tank.... The car has less than 1/4 tank of gas now. I'm figuring if gas isn't leaking from the sending unit now (it isn't), then no gas will pour out of the hole when I remove the sending unit. For replacement, does anyone know where I can buy the gasket between the sending unit and the tank? or a part #? Does anyone know if typically you can reuse the old one? Any other parts that I should buy for this job? I'd like to have everything ready before I start. Looks pretty straight forward... disconnect battery, use non sparking tool to loosen the metal ring. Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated. Oh, and have fire extinguisher ready....hmm. Thanks in advance, Jon |

you might be able to find the gasket at a local part store for order, but i dont have a part # for you. reusing the old one can be a little sketchy because of it basically being old and wont ill say "seal" as well and you might still leak gas. if you feel uncomfortable id say let the shop do it just to be safe (if its reasonable price) im not sure about the tig welding part as ive never done it to a car yet. |

If you do it yourself take the wheel off and work from the side. Don't ever do anything that can trap you under a car that involves fuel. Clean up the area around the pickup before you remove it so you can close the opening with duct tape while the pickup is out. Use a brass rod or bar and brass, plastic or rubber mallet to remove the locking ring. I have brazed fuel pickups before, but if a new one can be had that would be my first choice. I think you can get one for about $80.00. The gasket is 1/16 thick. A dealer still might have it, just look for a later year. If you can get a piece of viton and cut your own that might be better for todays gas. My 65 was loose so I made a 3/32" gasket that fixed it. |

I had the same thing happen to me not too long ago, and Fopar brazed the line for me, once I took the sending unit out of the car. With a 1/4 tank gas might still leak out some, I'd put a bucket under the tank when you're taking the sending unit out, just in case. I got a Dorman gasket and locking ring set from a local parts dealer for about $6, though they had to order it straight from the company. The part number was 579-006, for the 2" hole and 579-005 for the 3" hole. We found it in the Dorman book and had to match it by sight though, since our vehicles weren't listed in the book.
