Post subject:  76 225 into a 64 power wagon

Hello all, I have a 64 power wagon with a tired 225 and a NP435 4spd. A friend has a relatively low mileage (40,000) 225 that is for sale from his mother's wrecked 76 volare. I would like to put the 76 in while I build another slant the way I want(cam/intake, big valves/port work). Is this an easy swap? I know the crankshafts are different. I did a search but I couldn't seem to find the difference, crank wise, between the 64 and the 76 slants. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Dan Bauer

The register (hole) on the back of the crank is larger on the '68 and later cranks. The '76 crank may or may not be finished for the pilot bushing too. You should be able to get away with using a later flywheel and NAPA has a special bushing if the pilot hole is not finished. You will also have to use the pan and pickup from your old motor. All in all, it shouldn't be too bad of a swap. Dennis

Finding a "big hole" flywheel is going to be the challenge with this swap. My thought is that your 64 Powerwagon with the granny low truck 4-speed uses the special 11 inch clutch and V8 / SL6 jumbo cast iron bell housing. (are the bell housing to engine mounting bolts on the inside of the bellhousing, is the starter in the low V8 location?)

If this is the case, your best option may be to have your flywheel's center hole open-up to the later engine's crank hub size. If you use different engines later, you can add a special spacer ring or be sure to always use the later crank in any engine you rebuild.

Yes, the bell housing is the large sl6/sm blk type with the large starter down low. I was thinking that opening up the center might be an option. What year did the slant go to the cast crank? I'm guessing that the 68 and up forged and the later cast cranks do not interchange.
I was toying with the idea of putting a 360 in her but there is something about watching the look on someone's face when they lift the hood on the big crew cab and see a slant 6 in there.
Thanks for the help all, Dan Bauer in Az
