Post subject:  Transmission Fluid Leak

Howdy all,

So I have tranny fluid leaking, it seems to primarily run down the exhaust pipe that runs down the center line of the car. I have a mechanic family member who says the culprit is probably an old transmission pan gasket. The car sat for a while on flat tires before I started restoring it. I have paperwork saying the tranny was overhauled in 2002 and everything else on it seems to be fine. Any thoughts from the experts would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

There are a lot of places where transmission fluid could be leaking. Could be the pan gasket, could be where the shift cable enters the trans, could be where the speedometer cable enters the trans, could be where the park cable enters the park lock housing or where the park lock housing attaches to the trans, could be the front pump seal or the dipstick tube O-ring or the neutral safety switch or any of several other places. Once everything under there is wetted down with fluid, it's basically impossible to tell the source until you thoroughly clean down all the leaked fluid (right back to clean/dry metal) then carefully watch where the leak forms, or add a small bottle of UV dye to the trans fluid and see where the leak jumps out under blacklight. If you'll be replacing the pan gasket, now's a good time to think about upgrading (or for the first time installing) the transmission fluid filter, trans pan, and trans pan gasket. See this post for parts and installation info.
