Post subject:  Shaker's Engine Build Started

I have a 1973 BH engine that I dismantled. The bottom end was stock down to the 1973 bearings. The upper end had been apart though. It had a peanut head plus hyd rockers, lifters, and pushrods. The engine was "donated" by a friend. By the looks of things it could be a low milage motor (or very well maintained). The steps at the top of the bore were minimal and the pistons appear very good for wear as well.

I've had the block cleaned, checked for cracks and the line checked as well. All good so far in those departments. (Make sure you brush the main oil feed that runs the length of the block for your final cleaning. Even though they baked the block there is still some old caked oil in there)

Per one of Doug's articles I've tapped the oil returns in the lifter bore area to make some mini stand pipes to pool the oil and help cam oiling.

I've also checked the mains to make sure everything was drilled through at the factory as well.

I also installed the main caps + bearings in order to take measurements so I can specify the crank main dimensions for when it is cut.

That will be my stopping point (I'll leave the mains torqued) so I can do a partial hard block fill and let it cure for 30 days.

The block is safely tucked in the back of the garage waiting for the block filler to cure. (partial fill 1.5")

Pistons are measured and the final bore size will be 3.465". Wiesco's tolerance on these pistons were great!

The main bearings are another story. I will have to specify different sizes for each crank main to be cut as the largest and smallest bearing (torqued and inside mic'd) measured .001" apart.
