Ok on my 71 Duster I have two sliders. The one up top says Off.....Heat.....Defrost

The one on bottom is a slider for the temperature. I got that one fixed up yesterday.

Now the problem with the top slider is that I can only get it to slide between Heat and Defrost. The slider just wont go to the left past Heat to the Off position. I have some of the dash apart and those two cables are in tact. I can move both of the flaps with my hand and they do their job, yet the control just wont go over to the Off position. Does anyone know whats up with this? I can't really see up that high in the dash to tell whats going on but I can feel that everything is ok and none of the cables are broken.

I've not seen your problem, but I've taken apart a variety of Mopar heater controls.

It must be either the lever or the cable hitting something; usually, only one screw or clip holds the cable housing in place. If the bracket broke or the cable slipped or was pushed out of place it could have a very restricted travel if the lever hits the outer cable, or something could have simply fallen down inside and settled in the lever's path.

On a '71, it shouldn't be too hard to reach up around the radio and put your left fingers on the lever if you lay on the passanger side floor. Feel if the outer cable is hitting the lever or not as you move it back and forth with your right hand. With the lever all the way over you could probably lift the cable loop off the lever and move them independently.

To actually get at it, you'd probably be best off pulling out the radio any any ducting in the way 1st.

Like KBB said something is hitting on it , Im not familiar with the workings of your car , but the culprit to my truck was leaves in the duct and preventing the doors to close fully . It was fun to put the fan on high, and slide the lever back and forth ,and get a showering of bits of leaves. I just hope it is not a mouse in there.

It might be that the cable length needs to be "reset". If your '71 is similar to my '74, the cable is adjustable. Here is what it says in the factory shop manual:

"To adjust the mode control cable, place the mode control lever in the "defrost" position. Remove the auto adjust clip from the mode door crank. Place the lever in the "off" position. Slide the auto adjust clip along the cable core wire as far as possible toward the cable housing. Place the lever in the "defrost" position. Reinstall the auto adjust clip on the crank arm. To complete the adjustment, move the lever all the way to the "off" position, until it contacts the edge of the bezel slot."

In other words, the thin "core wire" slips through the self-adjusting clip when it is installed. When you slide the lever to the "defrost" position (after making the above adjustments), the slack in the wire is taken up, and the clip grips the wire, preventing it from sliding any further. It sounds to me like too much slack has been taken up and the clip is gripping the wire too far up the cable. Take it loose and reset the position of the clip.

Let us know how it goes,
Jerry

Ok I'm gonna try that tomorrow and see what I come up with.

Hey for years now my car has gotten this oily residue all over the inside of the windows. I can never really clean it all the way off but after a few days it builds up and gets all foggy. Almost like if the carpet was wet and it got hot the next day, the condensation would build up on the windows. Well this is like a greasy foggy substance. Could it be because my heater won't go to the off position and it's coming up from the heater core or something like that? I can't think of anything else it could be.

Are you talking about all windows or just front windshield? Are you absolutely sure you don't have any leaks from the heater core (damp carpet)? Do you smell a very slight sweet smell in the car (do you know what antifreeze smells like)?

Let us know,
Jerry

My vote is cast for a leaking heater core causing window film. Rotting carpet from body leaks don't generate oily film.

Time to pull the heater box, clean it, install a rebuild kit from Detroit Muscle Tech.

Luckily, A Bodies have low priced heater cores. You can do this job for about a C note.

All the windows get the film on it equally. Everything inside the car is dry. I changed the heater core about 2 years ago (not that it means anything), and yeah it doesn't smell like anti freeze at all. I pulled the front off the heater box when I was doing the cable deal and there were no signs of leakage at all. Nothing was wet or damp. No bad smells, nothing out of the ordinary other than just looking kinda old.
