Post subject:  ignition coil resistance question

Hi

I'm wanting to upgrade my OEM ignition coil to a flamethower from pertronix but I notice there are two options for my application. I want to know what the difference between a 1.5 and 3 ohm resistance on the primary is going to do

Thanks

Cheers

With the 1.5 you need the ballast resistor.

With the 3.0 you bypass the ballast resistor (1 less thing to fail)

Starts up fine with the ballast removed and with the 3.0 coil.

I've been running the 3.0 coil (ballast bypassed) with the pertronix ignition for a couple of years now with no problems.

I had talked to a pertronix tech, and he recommended the 3.0 / no ballast with their ignition vs. the 1.5 / ballast............

Ed,

Would that work for Orange Mopar box as well? If my chrome MSD Blaster 2 coil ever goes out that would be a nice back up. I am currently running the .85 ohm resistor that came with the coil. I purchased it about 3 years ago and has been working fine so far.

Would the larger 3.0 ohm Pertronix open air HV E-Core coils work as well?

Yes, the 3 ohm coil would work with any constant dwell ignition box (pertronix, mopar.....) on 4 & 6 cylinder engines. (would work with an HEI too, but as the HEI adapts to the coil and the coil voltage, it's not necessary)

Don't know anything about the Pertonix open air HV E-Core coils.

Has anyone used the larger 3.0 ohm Pertronix open air HV E-Core coil with their MOPAR box with out a resistor?

Just curious if this would work as back up plan if my chrome MSD Blaster II Coil dies. I bought it a few years ago and is working fine for now.

Thanks!

It should work.

I just don't know the difference between the 2 pertronix coils.
