I've been offered a 225 slant six from a 1961 plymouth with a 3 speed stick shift. Will my 1966 automatic transmission bolt up to the crankshaft? Are there any other differences I should be aware of?
Thanks,
Larry Gardinier
PS if you want see where this this engine is going visit my website www.artracer.com Perhaps the wildest paint job on any slant six car?

Welcome to the board!

That is one cool Dart. Looks very nicely done. :D

There will be some differences between the 60 and 66 motors, but the basic block/crank will be the same. It will bolt up to your trans.

You may have to change oil pans and use the one for your car. Valve cover too.

Yup, it'll fit. There's no valve cover change needed, but you will need to swap the oil pan and oil pickup pipe assembly.

Thank you for visiting the website! I know that the crank shaft changes on big block V8s during that time period but I didn't know if the slant six did the same. I have no problem with the idea of changing the oil pan. In fact I think I have another 66 oil pan in the garage. I'm going to use my 2x1 bbl Offy intake and my red wrinkle valve cover off of my 170. The "new " 225 has only 30k miles and has been sitting a while so I'll go through it some while it's out. Perhaps a bigger cam is in order? Any recommendations? I'm using a single 2.5 " exhaust with the exhaust manifold hogged out to 2.5 "
Thanks again for the help!
Larry Gardinier

Wow. That car is amazing.

As long as your engine is really a '61 and the trans is original '66, you should be fine. Everyone has steered you right on other issues as well - oilpan, etc...

Larry, You have to bring that car to the Mopar show/race, at Valdosta, Ga. Memorial Day Weekend 2009. That is fantastic, I have to see it in person.

I'll be bringing the Dart to the Daytona Turkey Run on Thanksgiving weekend if you want to see it in person. At this point I would like you to lower your expectations of my workmanship. It's nowhere near perfection but it sure is fun!

Doublecheck the back of the crank to be sure it has a 1 9/16 counter-bore for the torque converter "nose" to register into.

I have seen a few early, stick shift cranks that only had the manual trans input shaft / pilot hole machined into them. This would be a easy visual check. It should look like the photo below.

I dig your dart! does the center console double as AC or is it just a stereo?

The console houses the stereo and speakers but saddly not AC. I would love to add AC to the car but it's not easy with a slant six. How did you lower that A100 van ? I love those and I haven't seen one slammed like that before.
